Brighton Dances at the Market

By Friends of the Arts in
Brighton

Brightons got talent, as

evidenced by the diverse
groups showcased at Dance
Day at the Market on July 26.
This community celebration
of dance was the second in
the Arts at the Market Series,
sponsored by Friends of the
Arts in Brighton (FAB),
and hosted by the Brighton
Farmers Market.
The audience was treated
to a variety of types of dance,
including ballet from Ballet
Prestige, Indian dance
from The Bharata School
of Indian Classical Dance
and Music, tap dance from
Jaz Koft & Sophia Fusilli
of Goebel Dance, modern
dance from PACE Dance
and Tasha Colton, and musical theater by performers
from the Brighton Summer
Arts production of Bye Bye,
Birdie.
The event highlighted
the many forms of dance
available locally, including
one relatively recent addition. Brighton has never
had a true ballet academy
before, remarked Katherine Johnson, owner of Ballet
Prestige. Being located right
here at Twelve Corners has
really helped us introduce
this wonderful art form to
the community. It was a
pleasure to be a part of this
year's event at the Brighton
Farmer's Market.

were also given special

opportunities to participate.
The morning started with a
Zumba class, led by Steven
Case from the JCC. Audience
members were introduced
to Latin ballroom dance
moves by Brighton alumnus
DazMann Still. The Country Dancers of Rochester
invited anyone interested to
join them in contra dancing,
made more lively with live
ddle accompaniment.
The biggest community
performance of the day was
a flash mob dance, taught
and led by Ellie Rosenfeld,
a BHS choreographer and
Alumni Liaison for Friends
of the Arts in Brighton.
Rosenfeld chose the dance
because of its association
with Michelle Obamas Lets
Move! campaign. When we
were brainstorming ideas for
Dance Day, I knew this was
the perfect choice for us,
said Rosenfeld. The dance

was fun and easy to learn,

and a great way to show
that people of all ages can use
dance to really enjoy themselves while being active and
healthy.
The crowd was thrilled to
see Brighton Town Supervisor Bill Moehle jump right
in. Although I only had a
short period of time to learn
the moves, said Moehle, the
other dancers were more
than patient with me and we
all had a great time. Id like to
thank Friends of the Arts in
Brighton, who hosted Dance
Day, and I look forward to
Art Day at the Market on
September 27.
Art Day at the Market,
a community celebration
of visual art, will take place
from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on September 27, at the Brighton
Farmers Market. The event
will be a funky and interactive art experience for people
of all ages: See trees wearing
