THIS SPRING'S PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO DEEPEN AND ENRICH

YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF NORDIC ART AND CULTURE
This March and April, the American Swedish Institute offers experiences to melt away the last
vestiges of winter. In addition to finding refuge and inspiration in the exhibition, The Watercolor
Worlds of Lars Lerin that is stunningly displayed in the Turnblad Mansion and Osher Gallery, ASI
offers a variety of programmatic experiences this spring. Programs such as Don Luces lecture, Birds:
Artfully Dead or Alive, on Saturday, March 5 will give you a new perspective on the Lerin exhibition.
Guided tours of the exhibition are offered to the public twice a week as a way to dive deeper into
the exhibit content. Tours of The Watercolor Worlds of Lars Lerin are offered on Fridays, 1:30 p.m. and
Saturdays, 11 a.m., provide an expanded narrative about the art and artist. Group tours of the exhibit
can be arranged by calling (612) 871-4907.

ASI is also pleased to be able to present some of the best Swedish artistic exports. Dont miss
the staged reading of Almost Equal To by award-winning author and playwright, Jonas Khemiri, on
Saturday, April 30. Take in Trespassing Bergman, a film that brings together some of the worlds
leading actors and directors to look at the work and life of legendary Swedish filmmaker Ingmar
Bergman. This documentary is part of our continuing Winter Film Series, sponsored by the Swedish
Film Institute and the Swedish Institute. The screening will take place on Wednesday, March 9 at
7 p.m. and is free with museum admission.
For people interested in current events in Sweden, we offer two engaging and informative programs:
Community Conversation: The Swedish Welfare Housing Dilemma by Lena Norrman, senior

Message from the President & CEO

Two years ago while
vacationing in Sweden,
I was driving with
my good friend Jordi
through the Dalarna
countryside. Chugging
along in his trusty
Volvo wagon, we
explored some terrain unfamiliar to me. The day
before we had walked the forest near his house
picking mushrooms coming back with full baskets
of mostly chanterelles and Karl Johans. This day,
we wended our way through backroads north of
Rttvik, pausing in Boda and the beautiful church
at Ore, and then Jordi realized that we were close
to Styggforsen, a nature preserve with a dramatic
waterfall which was the location for one of Ingmar
Bergmans greatest films, The Virgin Spring.
We stopped here, of course, and hiked through
the preserve, soaking in its beauty, inspired by the
trees, the falling, rushing water and the sunlight
filtering through the dense trees. Its a mystical
place, and one can readily see its value to Bergman
as a film locale. Many associate Bergmans films
only with the Gotland landscape, but he spent
many childhood summers in Dalarna and as an
adult would return to Dalarna to flee the
pressures of life in order to write and renew
his creative spirit.
Every visit to Sweden that Ive ever taken,
irrespective of the season, has always included
moments like these: excursions into the natural
landscape when I more fully understand why my
Swedish friends so highly value their time outdoors
whether to relax and renew oneself, or to seek
creative inspiration or to harvest natures bounty.
These experiences also accentuate the importance
of nature to our creative expression. The physical
landscape we rely on for our survival also shapes
how we view and interpret the world around
us. Art (in its broadest sense, including paintings,
film, music, design) created from or influenced

by natures inspiration has an impact on our

personal identity and cultural heritage.
Our theme this year is rooted in the
relationship of nature and culture and at the
center of our programming is the remarkable
art of Lars Lerin, who starts each day with a
meditative walk through nature. His paintings
draw deeply from the natural and built-up
landscapes he finds in Sweden and other parts
of the world. He is a master of watercolor, and
through these works he shows us something
new about the world or inspires us to think
differently about it.
Lars Lerin is well-known in Sweden, not only
as a painter but as a writer and through his
public appearances. In 2014, his book Naturlra
(The Lesson of Nature) won one of Swedens
most important non-fiction literary awards,
the August Prize. His newest book, Axels tid,
is a memoir of his mentor, Axel Florin, and is
accompanied by music composed by former
ABBA-member Benny Andersson.
The spring 2016 season at the American
Swedish Institute is filled with many incredible
opportunities to take in great art, to learn, and
to be inspired by the natural world around
us. We appreciate our friends at the Nordic
Watercolour Museum in Skrhamn for their
partnership in this effort, and to our members
and donors whose gits make this possible.
Im grateful, as well, to my colleagues and our
volunteers for their work in serving our visitors
and community so well. I hope to see you
frequently at ASI during the coming months!
Or perhaps well bump into each other (not
literally) on one of this regions stellar bike paths
or nature trails. Vlkomna!

Featuring original photography by
internationally lauded chef, Magnus Nilsson,
Magnus Nilsson's Nordic: A Photographic Essay
of Landscapes, Food and People, captures his
encounters with the people he met and the
places he visited during his travels through the
Nordic region while researching his popular
seminal text, The Nordic Cookbook.
His original photography is a place-based
illustration and examination of Nordic food
culture that unravels the mysteries of Nordic
ingredients and introduces the world to Nordic
culinary history and cooking techniques.

The Watercolor Worlds of Lars Lerin

Through May 22, 2016
In this solo exhibition of contemporary Swedish
watercolor master Lars Lerin (b. 1954), 40+
large-scale, monumental works (194 original
watercolors assembled together) depict both
natural and social environments that span place
and time with a strong Nordic temperament.
Lerins watercolors, with their masterly play
of light, affect us almost like an invocation.
Our gaze wanders across the details house
facades, trunks of birch trees, patches of snow,
abandoned farms and industrial towns. His
pictures range from the chill of the Lofoten
islands to the heat of India, from the forests of
his childhood in Swedens Vrmland province
to unexplored stretches of Iran. Near and far,
nature and culture, brought together in one
place.
Widely celebrated in the Nordic art world,
Watercolor Worlds is Lerins first North American
exhibition in more than 30 years. The works are
displayed in ASIs contemporary Osher Gallery
and throughout the historic Turnblad Mansion
Galleries.

A Troll Family Adventure

Through Summer 2016
As tall as trees and as ancient and rugged as
the Nordic landscape from which they come,
trolls are some of lore's most fascinating and
varied creatures. Some live under bridges,
others deep inside caves. They can carry their
heads under their arms or hide their hearts
inside wells. They can walk across oceans and
fly over mountains. Trees and shrubs may
grow from their heads, and their noses can be
long enough to stir soup. There are troll hags,
troll daughters, and elderly, shrunken trolls.
Old or young, they are quarrelsome, ugly, and
boastful, and they love to trick princesses and
children. To defeat them, children must rely
on the strengths of their humanity, persistence,
kindness, pluck, and willingness to heed
good advice.

by Minnesota photographer, Cameron Wittig,

Magnus Nilsson is the author of the Fviken
cookbook, also published by Phaidon. He is
featured in the Emmy-Award winning US PBSTV series, The Mind of a Chef, and the Netflix
docu-series, Chef's Table.
In 2015 he was awarded the White Guide
Global Gastronomy Award. His restaurant,
Fviken, is currently listed at number 19 on the
San Pellegrino Worlds Best Restaurants list.

STAGED READING by Jonas Khemiri

the Bors Tidning Award for Best Literary Debut
Novel and also became an enormous bestseller,
selling over 200,000 copies in paperback the
most of any book in Sweden in 2004.

Staged Reading [Almost Equal To]

Saturday, April 30 10:30 a.m.
After premiering to sold out audiences at the
Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, Jonas
Hassen Khemiris play Almost Equal To has been
recently translated to English. ASI welcomes
Khemiri, an August Prize award winning writer,
to Minneapolis for a staged reading of the play.
Seven actors take to ASIs stage for a 30-40
minute reading from the play, followed by a
Q & A session with the writer and translator.
In Jonas Hassen Khemiris Almost Equal To we
encounter a number of people who are colliding
with the economy surrounding them. They all
invest money in postage and pine nuts, fake
bubbles and perfumes, strollers and utopias.
Almost Equal To is a funny and brutal play that
tries (and fails?) to give the audience a maximized
entertainment value for every dollar invested.
Support from the Swedish Arts Council and the
Martin E. Segal Theater Center/City University of
New York helped make this program possible.

Khemiris 2015 release, Everything I Dont

Remember, has been awarded the August Prize
in the category Best Swedish Fiction Book of
the Year The August Prize is Swedens biggest
and most important national literary award, given
by the Swedish Publishers Association. Khemiri
was nominated for the same prize in 2006 for his
novel Montecore: The Silence of the Tiger.
Free.
SPEAKER
Jonas Hassen Khemiri is one of the most
important writers of his generation in Sweden.
When his debut novel, One Eye Red (Ett ga rtt)
was published in 2003, Khemiris eccentric and
imaginative prose made a huge splash and reached
an audience far beyond traditional literary circles.
The book-turned-phenomenon was awarded

With the emergence of the Peoples Home

(folkhemmet) and the welfare state, Swedes
all had the right to good living conditions.
Old apartment buildings in the city with small,
dark rooms and shared toilets in the hallway
or the courtyard were replaced with modern
housing with new facilities. This idea has
recently changed drastically. Who can afford
or even obtain housing in the larger cities?
With growth of the population in larger cities,
the housing situation is in crisis. The idea of
everyones right to affordable housing is still
present, but reality shows another picture.

Accelerated Advanced Swedish
Wednesdays, March 30 May 25

9 11 a.m.

This class, held entirely in Swedish, is for students with advanced language
skills to increase proficiency. We will read the novel I detta tecken by Joanne
Greenberg. We will develop vocabulary, work on advanced grammar, and discuss
Swedish media events. Additionally, short media clips or radio programs will be
shared to facilitate listening comprehension.
I detta tecken (translation of the novel In this Sign by Joanne Greenberg): Abel
and Janice Ryder begin their married life together with all the hopes and dreams
of a young couple deeply in love. But before long they realize that their deafness
stands as an immense barrier between them and a society that seems to work
only for those who can hear. Inexperienced, ignorant, and bewildered, they leave
the harsh environment of a school for the handicapped and enter the insensitive
world of the hearing. Through years of debt and misunderstanding, hard and
degrading work, the raising of a hearing daughter, common tragedies and joys,
they learn that the remarkable tool of sign language enables them to survive, and
indeed, to forge a love too powerful to be broken by the painful, extraordinary
world into which they were born. Instructor: Ingela Haaland.
Course Materials: I detta tecken, available through instructor.
Tuition: $135 ASI members / $155 nonmembers. Register by March 21 after
this date, registrants will be charged an additional $10 late fee.

Three Thoroughly Exhausting Days in Stockholm

Saturday, April 2

1 3:30 p.m.

ASI instructor Gregg White thinks of Stockholm as his second home town and will
help you plan the perfect visit! Hell share an insiders perspective on where to go,
what to do, see, and eat in three short, but glorious, days in the Swedish capital.
Bring any travel guides or maps of Stockholm that you already own to class.
This course is in English. Instructor: Gregg White.
Tuition: $20 ASI members / $25 nonmembers. Please register at least one week in
advance.

Languages of Sweden, Past and Present

Tuesdays, April 19 and 26

1:15 2:45 p.m.

What languages have historically belonged to Sweden? Which are the official
minority languages of Sweden? Well look at Finnish, Sami, Romany and Yiddish.
How has the body of languages in Sweden changed over time, and which languages
exist in today's Sweden? This class, conducted in English, offers an overview of the
official and unofficial minority languages of Sweden. We will listen to a variety of
Swedish dialects, learn where and why Swedish has existed in small isolated
pockets of the world, and look at the etymology of Swedish names of places
today and what they mean. Instructor: Ingela Haaland
Tuition: $25 ASI members / $30 nonmembers. Please register at least one week in
advance, or call for availability.

A Man Called Ove Book Discussion

Sunday, May 15

12:30 2:30 p.m.

are a'changin' for cantankerous old Ove - new status, no job, new neighbors, no
purpose. Full of dry humor and sensitivity, the reader joins Ove in transitioning to
contemporary Swedish life. Instructor: Jean Hanslin
Tuition: $15 ASI members / $18 nonmembers. Please register at least one week
in advance.

This course picks up where the summer 2015 Finnish Beginning V left off. We'll
continue on with the book Suomen mestari 2, covering grammatical topics such
as the perfect and pluperfect tenses and possessive suffixes, and themes such as
holidays and customs, and education and work. Instructor: Daniel Karvonen.

grammatical topics such as the partitive plural and the object, and cultural themes
such as food and holidays. The primary focus of the course will be on speaking

Lars Lerin: Kulisser/Sceneries

Lars Lerin is a master of watercolor.
He knows everything there is
to know about the temper and
movement of this media, along with
its strengths and weaknesses. His
images bear the imprint of his hands
but also of his heart and mind. This
extensive exhibition embraces both
sadness and warmth, melancholia and
hope.
Lars Lerin has also begun to
reinterpret works by other artists
and paint stills from films that have moved him, reproducing key
scenes from classics by both Alfred Hitchcock and Werner Herzog.
The result is paintings with the characteristic suspense of the film
medium.
Hardcover, in Swedish and English, 103 pages.
