SIOP Lesson Plan Template

STANDARDS:
RI.5.1- Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing
inferences from the text.
RI.5.9- Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject
knowledgeably.
RI.5.10- Read and comprehend informational texts including history/social studies, science, and technical
texts, at the high end of the grades 4-5 text complexity band independently and proficiently.
W.5.2- Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
W.5.10- Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter

Science: Why the Sun is important to our Solar System?

MOTIVATION/ANTICIPATORY SET (Building Background):


Focused on the Milky Way and Andromeda Galaxies in previous days lesson; students will be learning about
the Sun and stars in their science class to go along with the Language Arts assignment with the Sun.
PRESENTATION/INPUT/MODELING (Language & Content Objectives, comprehensible input, strategies,
interaction, feedback):
Reread the Performance task (teacher and student).
Introduce essential question (Why is the Sun important to our Solar System? What are the
characteristics of the Sun?)
Model of correct way to text code ( read the first two paragraphs of the article and text code info about
the sun so students know what they are looking for.)

PRACTICE/APPLICATION (meaningful activities, interaction, strategies, feedback):


Independent reading and text coding (Students will first read the article independently and text code
and find information that describes a star).
Turn and Talks (Will share the information they found that describes a star and also will discuss their
own definition of a star that they come up with).
Whole group discussion ( Teachers and students will discuss together what the characteristics they
found in the article; students will come up to the Elmo to show what they found.)
Shared reading (students will reread the text together and text code together to find characteristics that
describe the sun.

REVIEW/ASSESSMENT (review objectives and vocabulary, assess learning):


Independent Practice: Students will answer the prompt, Using information from the text, describe the
characteristics of the sun and its importance to our solar system.
Students will be given a rubric to self assess their response before they turn it in so they know the
expectations of the assignment.

EXTENSION:
If students are struggling text coding and starting their extended response, I will hold a small group for
the students that are struggling.
