Supporting Student Development of Competencies:

Manage Information

This learning guide is designed for use by

professional learning communities, leaders,
learning coaches and teachers, or as a self-paced
study to explore practical strategies to support student
development of Albertas competencies across the
curriculum and in every classroom.

This learning guide shares several strategies and ideas related to

supporting student development of the competency Manage
Information. Some of the strategies and ideas shared are ones
you may have already used with your students. The shift is to
become intentional about highlighting/discussing how these
tried and true strategies support the development of one or
more competencies.

Use this Learning Guide after viewing Manage

Information and Alberta Educations competency
indicators for Manage Information.

Learner Profile: Successful development of the Manage Information competency results in a learner who can
effectively access and use information from a variety of sources (print, digital, audio, video, human). This learner uses
a variety of processes to help him/her understand and interpret information and uses that information in a safe,
responsible and ethical way.

Key Strategies/Ideas:

Help students use multiple literacies to access, share and

create knowledge and discover, develop and apply
competencies across subject and discipline areas for
learning, work and life.

Help students identify a purpose and process for

information gathering.

Use protocols to assist in processing information creatively

and effectively. Protocols like Take a Stand or Say
Something allow for a personalized and learner-centred
approach to processing the information in any document,
article, video or story.

Provide ideas for how to capture, share and/or transform

information.

Help students understand how to use information and

technology in an ethical and responsible manner, including
a focus on copyright and plagiarism. The nine themes of
digital citizenship should be explored beginning in
kindergarten and continuing throughout all the grades.

Help students identify credible sources and recognize false

or misleading information.

Questions for Reflection and Discussion:

Competencies are an interrelated set of attitudes, skills and
knowledge that are drawn upon and applied to a particular
context (Alberta Education). When asking students to
manage information, what other competencies will the
students need to apply to effectively manage information?
To what degree does your district/school policy on digital
citizenship support the development of the Manage
Information competency?
As a staff, use the Take a Stand Protocol to process the
ideas/information in your district/school policy on digital
citizenship. Discuss how the protocol supports a
personalized approach to processing the information, as well
as how it assisted in broadening your perspective on the
information contained in the policy document.
What other strategies have you used to support student
development of the competency Manage Information?
