Dream It, Do It inspires students to consider
a career in manufacturing

Kari Krusemark used to
sell makeup ... now she sells
manufacturing. Krusemark,
from Elbow Lake, was recently hired as the Dream It, Do
It Outreach Coordinator for
the west central region of Minnesota. That lengthy job title
simply means she promotes
manufacturing careers to high
school students. Dream It, Do
It Minnesota is led by 360, a
manufacturing-based Center
of Excellence, and sponsored
by the Minnesota Department
of Economic Development,
Minnesota Precision Manufacturing, and Tri-State Manufacturers Association based in
Elbow Lake.
I talk to anyone who will
listen about manufacturing,
said Krusemark, adding she
has a longer, more technical
job description as well: My
job is to inspire young people
to seek careers in manufacturing, improve the public image
of manufacturing, inuence
schools, parents, and guidance counselors to embrace
manufacturing in schools, and
involve Minnesota manufacturers in a leadership role so it
is a coordinated effort.
Krusemark started in October visiting area manufacturers that belonged to Tri-State,
to nd out what they were
looking for in workers and
what the outlook was. It was
pretty discouraging.
We push four-year degrees for high school graduates so much that the manufacturing industry is hurting.
In ve to ten years the baby
boomers will be retiring and
the situation will get much
worse. That is why we are
encouraging high school students to think about getting a
two year degree at a technical
school and starting a career in
manufacturing. Job placement
for tech grads who are looking
for a manufacturing career is

100 percent!
Some manufacturers will
hire right out of high school
and train the students themselves.
Krusemark said there are
consistently 5,000 to 10,000
manufacturing positions open
in Minnesota alone and the
average annual income is
$59,565, including benets.
That is 21 percent higher than
the average annual wage in
Minnesota. The average pay
for a welder is over $19 per
hour.
Krusemark found out that
within 50 miles of Elbow Lake
there is an amazing variety of
manufacturing going on. Everything from aviation and
military parts, including tank
parts, guns, sh houses, docks,
plastics, Bobcat and snowmobile parts are being built and
shipped all over the USA and
beyond.
Its pretty cool.
Krusemark likes to bring
items manufactured locally to
the schools she visits to show
and tell.
Just yesterday I visited
classes at Pelican Rapids High
School, said Krusemark. I

brought with me some Major
League Baseball bats manufactured by MAX Bats in
Brooten. The students loved it,
they ate that right up.
Another part of her job
is getting manufacturers and
schools on the same page as to
what they could be teaching to
help.
Manufacturers are actually giving money to tech
schools to supply equipment.
They want to get the students
started on the right track.
She talks about M State
Moorhead, a school that is going to bring a trailer around
to high schools that is set up
with welding units so students
can learn to weld, a skill that
is needed in many manufacturing jobs and not being taught
in many high schools anymore.
She also recently provided
a game app to WCA 5th and
6th graders called Build it
Better, a mobile game application targeted at teaching
young minds about manufacturing.
Krusemark said parents
need to have a conversation

and consider the cost savings
and job opportunities of going
to a two year technical college
instead of a four year school.
Our children are missing out on an opportunity that
could put them on a pathway
to success. There are hundreds
of thousands of jobs available
in manufacturing across the
country and your child is in
demand.

manufacturing. Todays manufacturing industry is completely different from what it used
to be. It is no longer repetitive,
low skilled labor. The industry today is about advanced
technologies, state of the art
facilities, and fast-paced work
environments.

Dairy couple overcome

challenges for love

ROSLYN, S.D. Love, it has been said, will always find

a way. This has certainly proven true for one happy dairy farm
couple.
A year ago, Chad Wasilk was a single dairy farmer. He and
his widowed father, Wayne, had worked hard to build their 85-cow
operation.
I am the third generation to dairy farm on this place, Wasilk
said. I started farming on my own right after high school. When
Dad suffered a back injury, I took over all the milking responsibilities.
Wasilk wanted someone to share his life, but didnt know
how to find such a person.
I could have gone out to the bars with my buddies, but that
wasnt really my style, said Wasilk, who hasnt missed a milking
since 1999. Ive had girlfriends, but its hard to find the very special one, someone who understands the dairy farm life.
Unbeknownst to Wasilk, his sister and his father were working on remedying his singlehood.
One day late last winter, my sister asked me to take a look
at something on the computer, said Wasilk, who doesnt count
himself as computer-savvy. She had begun to set up a profile for
me on FarmersOnly.com and wanted to know if I was OK with it.
I thought, Why not? and told her to go ahead.
One evening a few weeks later, Wasilk was viewing profiles
on FarmersOnly.com when a particular photo caught his eye.
I had a feeling about her right away, so I messaged her,
Wasilk said.
Wasilks first and only message on FarmersOnly.com was to
Valerie Wyffels.
Chads profile photo was of him carrying a baby calf, said
Wyffels, who was born the day after Valentines Day and was
named for the holiday. His profile impressed me because it spoke
about who he was and not what he had.
A week after their initial contact, Wyffels and Wasilk spoke
on the phone. That first conversation lasted four hours.
He was just the sweetest and kindest person I ever met,
Wyffels said.
After another two weeks of phone conversations, Wasilk and
Wyffels decided to meet in person. But there was a problem.
Valerie lived in Wabasso, Minn., which is three hours away,
Wasilk said. So I suggested that we meet in Watertown, located
about an hour from our farm. I said that maybe we could go see a
movie.
But Wyffels had a counterproposal.
I told Chad that since it was so hard for him to get away, I
should take along my chore clothes and come to his farm and help
him with chores, she said.
The next weekend, Wyffels made the three-hour trek from

They soon fell in love and have created a new life
together on the Wasilk dairy farm near Roslyn, S.D.

My stomach was doing flip-flops when I drove into Chads
driveway. I thought What have I gotten myself into? But when he
came walking out of the barn, my doubts melted away. I just knew.
He was everything I had hoped for and more, Wyffels said.
I had sent Dad out to the field to plant corn so I could spend a
little time alone getting to know Valerie, Wasilk said. But, about
three minutes after she arrived, Dad pulled onto the yard claiming
that he was having trouble with one of the planter boxes.
Shortly after arriving on the Wasilk farmstead, Wyffels was
helping Wasilk with chores.
I grew up on our family livestock farm, and I lived and worked
on a cattle and hog farm until my divorce in 2006, Wyffels said.
Farming is in my blood. I knew that farming was a life that I wanted
to share with someone.
Wyffels and Wasilk soon became a couple, and Wyffels drove
to the Wasilk farm every weekend. She and Wasilk would spend their
time enjoying such romantic dairy farm activities as picking rocks or
tearing out old barbed wire fence.
It wasnt long before Wyffels introduced Wasilk to some very
special people: her three sons, Briar,15, Owen, 14, and Avery, 12.
We both knew going in that each of us was a package deal,
Wyffels said. Chad had his dairy cows, and I had my boys.
Any apprehensions regarding what Wyffelss sons might

think about dairy farm life were quickly dispelled.
The boys love being back on a farm again, Wyffels said.
They like driving tractors and the skid loader and feeding cattle. They enjoy doing chores and even compete over who gets
to help Chad the most. Next spring, we plan to buy some beef
calves for them that they can have for 4-H projects.
Dad took an instant liking to the boys, Wasilk said. They
became his sidekicks. He takes them with him to the local coffee shop and they go fishing together. It has been wonderful for
everyone.
As this past summer waxed into autumn, Wasilk and
Wyffels began to have serious discussions about their future.
Winter was coming and I told Valerie that I was worried
about all the driving she was doing, Wasilk said.
Wyffels visited the farm nearly every weekend had put
nearly 20,000 miles on her car.
We both knew that we wanted to be together more than
we could bear to be apart, Wyffels said. So we decided that the
boys and I should move to Chads place.
Valerie is the one who took the biggest chance, Wasilk
said. She sold her house and uprooted her entire life to be with
me. But, we wouldnt have taken this step without her boys approval. I think the world of them. I was very happy to learn that
they felt the same about me.
Wyffels moved her family to the Wasilk farm in mid-October. Wasilk and Wayne were chopping silage at the time and
Wyffels soon found herself driving the silage truck and even piloting the chopper tractor.
Operating farm equipment was nothing new for me, but I
had never chopped silage before, Wyffels said.
Soon after moving in with Wasilk, Wyffels took a position
as bookkeeper at Twin Valley Tire in Webster.
I would rather be at home with Chad full time, said
Wyffels, who hopes to buy dairy cows she can add to the Wasilk
operation. I miss my friends and my family back in Wabasso,
but Im making new connections here. I cant imagine my life
without Chad. This is our family now. We are living the life we
love.
Theres a wedding in our future, we just dont yet know
when, said Wasilk, who confesses he did preliminary snooping
at a jewelry store this past Christmas.
Wyffels said the couples favorite part of the day is after she
gets home from work when they venture out to the barn for the
evening.
Before we start chores, we sit for a while and just talk
about how the day went. The little things like that are what mean
the most to me, Wyffels said.
It means a lot to Wasilk, too.
A year ago, I would have never dreamed that I could find
this much happiness, Wasilk said. Valerie is my best friend.
The boys are a tremendous help to me and Dad. Meeting Valerie
has made everything infinitely more enjoyable. I am so lucky to
have found someone to share the struggles and the joys and the
sorrows of dairy farm life.

Farmers thrive in wrestling, dairy

WILLMAR, Minn. There are two things the Carlson

family knows well farming and wrestling.
Those are what were passionate about, Chad Carlson
said. Family just combines both of them together.
Curtney, his two sons, Chad and Carl, and now their boys
have strong ties to dairy and wrestling. The Carlsons operate a
1,600-cow dairy farm near Willmar, Minn., and are immersed in
wrestling at Willmar High School.

We dont hunt or fish, said Chad, who with his wife, Kindra, have three boys, Cael, ninth grade, Caden, seventh grade,
and Conlan, third grade. Wrestling is our hobby. Its what we
enjoy doing.
The wrestling tradition started when Curtney competed for
Willmar High School before graduating in 1957.
Chad and Carl followed. Both started wrestling varsity in
seventh grade. During their high school careers, Chad won state
twice and Carl won state once.
They credited much of their success on the mat to Curtney
and their workouts in the barn. Every morning, he would wake
the boys up to do their daily workouts in the old tiestall barn.
Dad pushed us all the time, Chad said. It was a good
thing.
A big part of their workout was running laps around the
cows.
We probably ran at least two or three miles around the
cows each morning, Chad said. There wasnt a morning that
went by that we didnt do that.
They also did pull-ups on a 2-inch galvanized steel bar by
the pipeline, and jumped rope and did push-ups in the middle of
the alleyway.
We did circuits, said Carl, who together with his wife,
Kellie, have four children, Colten, 12th grade, Clay, 10th grade,
Cavin, second grade, and Kylie, preschool. One of us was doing pull-ups while the other was jumping rope. We kept going
around like that every morning.
However, chores were still a requirement after practice or
before going out.
I wanted to go watch the state wrestling tournament in
eighth grade. Dad said that I had to clean all the calf pens before
I could go, Chad said. By God, all 30 pens were cleaned before
I left.
But it wasnt all work. Chad and Carl often had a lot of fun
doing chores.

We had wheelbarrow races, Carl said. Wed fill up the
wheelbarrow with haylage and away we went. I had to have mine
dumped and back before Chad. We were flying to get to the far
end.
Doing chores prepared them for wrestling in more than one
way.
It was a mental thing. When we got done with practice,
we were hungry, we were tired, it was 10 below zero but we
still had to get our butt outside and feed the cows, Carl said. It
was probably the last thing we wanted to do because we were
freezing and just wanted to go in the house and relax. It made us
tougher mentally than it did physically.
All that hard work at home paid off on the mat.
We won because we outworked kids, Chad said. We
wouldnt give up anything. Theyd have to cut our arm off to
score a point. Thats how we were.
Chad and Carl went on to wrestle at the University of Minnesota.
I remember the coaches locked us in a sauna for mental
toughness. We couldnt break, Chad said. But, it was like being in the hayloft all summer. We just didnt have any bales to
throw. We just had to sit there. We were used to that.

Chad competed four years and qualified for nationals three
times. Carl also competed on the wrestling team, but injuries
halted his wrestling career during his junior year.

Looking back, it was hard, Carl said. I never got to achieve
my full potential.
Despite the injuries, Carl and Chad have memories theyll
never forget.
For Chad, that was always hearing his mom, Louises, voice
during his matches.
She was the only one I could hear when I wrestled, he said.
She didnt necessarily know what I needed to do, so shed just
yell, Get outta there! Chad! Get outta there!
Seeing their dads reaction while watching their matches was
another.
Wed see him in the stands and he would be white as a
ghost, Chad said. He told me its terrible and not easy to watch
matches as a parent and that it was harder to be a parent than a
wrestler. I didnt believe him because I was the one fighting for six
minutes.
But that perspective has since changed for both Carl and
Chad. Carls boys, Colten and Clay, and Chads son, Cael, are now
wrestling on varsity for Willmar High School.
Dad was right, Chad said. Its 10 times worse being a
parent than it is being a wrestler because you cant do anything
about it. Now, I have three to worry about. After a tournament,
Im wiped out because I wrestled every one of those matches with
them.
For Carl, the experience is a little different because he serves
as an assistant coach for the varsity team.
Its awesome, he said. I wouldnt trade it for anything. I
havent missed a match since they started. Ive been in their corner
for every match.
Getting off the farm to attend practices and meets is not usually a problem for Carl. He gets started by 6 a.m. and goes back to

the farm at night if needed.

I plan accordingly, Carl said. The days when I have an
away meet, I dont worry because we have a lot of extra hands
that can take over.
For Colten, having Carl coaching him is special.
I like having Dad as a coach, he said. Hes the most accomplished coach we have in here.
Seeing their boys follow in their footsteps has been extremely rewarding for Chad and Carl.
Its fun to watch them grow, mature and learn life lessons,
Chad said. I wish we could freeze time as they all grow up, but
we cant, so we have to enjoy the time we have and appreciate
it.
The changes and expansion to the dairy over the years has
impacted the type of work the boys can do physically. Since his
grandsons arent unloading feed carts with a fork, Curtney found
other opportunities for physical work to make them strong for
wrestling.

Curtney fills 5-gallon pails with rocks for the boys to carry
to the end of the driveway and back, and has them pull a horse
cutter sleigh on the gravel in the summer.
Dads very creative, Chad said.
Chad and Carl have them help with covering piles.
Instead of throwing bales in the hayloft, we have them
throw tires for three to four hours, Chad said. We use whole
tires not just side walls. Its hard.
Colten agreed.
Its a good workout, he said.
All of this has given the boys a strong work ethic.
Thats the biggest part, Cael said. Its fun to hear them
talk about how they used to have fun working in the barn and all
the stuff they did.
Hard work and a never-quit attitude is something Chad and
Carl want to pass down to their sons.
If they put the time and extra work in, they can get a
long ways, Chad said. They wont look back and wish they
wouldve done something else. They put in everything they have
and at the end of the day, they can fall back on that, trust in it and
believe in it.
The boys have the wrestling prowess of the previous generations. All three are ranked in the top 10 of their weight classes
and are hoping to advance to the state tournament. Colten, a senior, is ranked No. 1 in his class.
Hes really proud of the fact that he has the most losses of
any Carlson in wrestling, Carl said. We dont talk about the
fact that he also has the most 200 wins.
With the third generation of Carlsons active in wrestling,
Curtney has a wrestling room in his house and Chad plans to add
a full wrestling mat in his new house for everyone to use.
Theres never a family get together where theres not wrestling going on, Chad said.
The familys love for wrestling bleeds onto the mat with the
entire family, including Curtney and Louise, attending matches.
I meet Grandpa after every match, and give him a hug
and talk about it, Colten said. Having my entire family there to
experience it is a blessing.
Family, farming and wrestling is a tradition that will continue on for the Carlsons.
We work together, farm together and wrestle together,
Cael said. Its a blast to be one of the wrestling Carlson boys.
