The Wreckage
Drypoint Print with Watercolor Paint
11cm x 16cm
For this piece I used Japanese landscape prints as my cultural inspiration. The boat
that is in the print was ideal for the print since in the Japanese landscape prints that
I looked at, had subjects that revolved around the water. This was either boats or a
body of water. I incorporated this by including the boat and the water. I also chose
to use water colors to try and have the same effect that the Japanese prints have.
Human Needs
Clay Fired with Glaze
17.78cm x 12.7cm
This project was introduced as a sacred vessel. The vase and cup are essential
vessels, but for the sacred part I thought of needs are essential to human life and all
life. The sacred item I choose was water. It is essential for life to live and without
water, life cannot be sustained. I looked at classical Greek vases and how the
different shapes have different meanings. I modeled my vase after one that
typically holds liquids.
Self-Portrait
Acrylic Paint on Canvas
91.44cm x 91.44cm
I was inspired by the Art Nouveau period. The artist that was my main inspiration
was Mucha and his F.Chempenois. With my self portrait, I wanted to follow
Muchas original piece as well as possible, but instead of the girl that is in the
Muchas piece, I replaced her with myself in the painting. In this piece I tried to
mimic Muchas piece as much as possible.
Digital College
Digital Manipulation
45.72cm x 30.48cm
For this piece I wanted to explore the art movement of surrealism. I choose to
follow Rene Magritte and how he used repetition is his works. I followed this
design by using my eye as the item of repetition much like Magritte uses eyes in
some of his works. This piece was difficult since it was digital manipulation, the
program began to slow down since I had over 400 layers.
Tree of Trash
Aluminum Soda Cans on Empty Wine Bottle
45cm x 10cm
This project was inspired by the environment. I was partially inspired by how
nowadays there is always trash being littered and pollution. I choose to use soda
cans and a wine bottle because soda cans are often tossed out. The wine bottle
represents the truck of the tree and the soda cans were manipulated to appear as
branches and have leaves.
What The Heart Wants
Mixed Media
15cm x 22cm
The main inspiration I had for this piece was that I love to travel. To show this I
used a bird because they are able to travel. I also used maps to make each
individual feather and wing. I choose maps since birds are able to fly and when I
travel, flying in airplanes is usually how I travel. I placed the bird within the box
because the box represents the torso and the bird is representing of the heart. The
bird with map feathers represents that I love to do and what I want to do.
La Soleil et La Luna
Block Print
23cm x 16cm
In this piece I was also inspired by the art movement of Art Nouveau. I wanted to
try and capture the basics of the Art Nouveau movement. In order to do so I used
floral patterns and organic flowing lines. I do think that I could have used more
ways better reflect the movement.
Poppies
Acrylic on Canvas
60.96cm x 60.96cm
This is another piece that was inspired by my trip to Poland. I tried to use the vivid
imagery that I saw while there with all the bright red-orange poppies. I tried to use
impressionism, however, I ended up blending and not using short strokes of color
that is popular in impressionism.
Curatorial Rationale
The vision that I wanted for an overarching theme would be to incorporate items
that relate to nature in someway shape or form. In some of my pieces the aspect of
nature or the environment is more present, but in my digital collage it is more with
what images I used. The nature or natural aspect in that piece would be that I used
my own eye to create another bigger eye out of smaller ones. I explored this theme
of nature relating topics since, I am in an environmental class and learning about
the environment and all the topics that are in that class intrigue me and I am
passionate about that topic. I did not intend to make a message through my pieces,
but after looking at all the pieces that I made, I think that I want to show that the
Earth and environment are more important than people think and it is easy to think
that one thing is beautiful at this moment, but in the future it may not be there
because could be gone. Materials that I have used for my body of works, include
acrylic paint, drawing pencils, colored pencils, ink, and items for sculpture. While
thinking about what materials that I wanted for a project, I thought about what I
wanted to end product to be. For example, if I wanted it to be a sculpture, I made
sure that I was using materials that would be correct for a sculpture and that they
would align with what I wanted for my project. With materials though I had to play
around with them for what I think would work better for my project.
