What is wellness?
Wellness is a concept which cannot be delineated in a simple sentence as it is more
complex and is contrived of a multitude of components. The basic premise of wellness is
reaching the maximum potential that is available within every one of us via the balance of
elements that aggregate to the essence of life. There are 4 essential pillars within life that must
remain in a balanced homeostatic level that yields the best success & state of well being and
those pillars are: emotional, mental, physical, and social wellness (What is Wellness?). Within
these pillars, several external factors can determine the extent in which you consider yourself to
be at the state of well being. The most influential factors of wellness are lifestyle, decision
making, level of activity, habits, preference, setting of life, and other uncontrollable factors
(genetics & pathogens). Despite there being other minor components within the spectrum of
wellness, these pillars are the most important that will ensue lush prosperity and happiness
throughout your life.
Throughout one's life, maintaining a proper balance and healthiness of your emotional
& mental wellness will yield positive attributes in your personality and outlook towards life. One
may ask, what is the difference between emotional and mental wellness since they deal with the
same faculty of the human body which is the brain. The answer to emotional wellness is one's
ability to deal with their everyday emotions in everyday circumstances including the negative
and positive with a healthy manner (Wellness: Emotion Wellness). On the other hand, mental

healthiness refers to "a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own
abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, [...] and is able to make a contribution to his or
her community," according to the World Health Organization (Mental Wellness). In one's
younger years of development including teenagers, it is essential to keep your mental state in
check since underlying issues will be present for their rest of their life. The brain is shown not to
fully develop and continues to develop well into one's adulthood (Zero to Three). Knowing this,
common issues in this category of wellness including overwhelming, acute anger, anxiety,
depression or chronic stress can implicate ramifications in one's future such as emotional
instability. The ability to function normally can be altered with mental illnesses such as autism &
schizophrenia, so having your mental health evaluated can find treatment regarding coping with
these disease. Your brain is contrived of a thin balance of hormonal and chemical signals that can
lean away from homeostasis and lead to a decline in wellness for the categories of emotion and
state of mind. Instead of moping on such negative emotions or feeling hopeless with a mental
malady, always find the light that illuminates your pathway to the future. However, if you are not
able to, you can always seek for the help of other individuals. Help will always be available as
long as you are willing to stick your hand out for it.
Another key aspect of wellness throughout one's life is social wellness in a community
(Social Wellness). Social wellness refers to the relationships we have and how we interact with
others. There are many perks that ensue for maintaining social wellness in one's life. Some of
these include the ability for one to communicate with others, establish a positive network
around, develop skills in expressing one's self in social situations, and promote healthy relations
with individuals for a foreseeable future (Social Wellness). Being a recluse in regards to potential
friendships or bonds to being created is not a great method of expressing social wellness.

Although one may be introverted just as I am, one should always learn to establish long-lasting
friendships and manage time for others instead of only his or her personal activities. Some
individuals may have other illnesses that are contracted genetically or perhaps a disease. Issues
such as obsessive compulsive disorder and separation anxiety can hinder one's ability to maintain
a healthy relationship and establish long-term friendship without repercussions. Like any other
issue, there is always methods to cope with such debilitating disorders using therapy facilities
that promotes social wellness and makes an individual functional in a social setting. Establishing
a base for friendship include loyalty, honesty, happiness, courtesy, and generosity to one another.
One can participate in active group discussions, keep in touch with family & friends, and join
any club that stimulates social interactions in order for social wellness to ensue (Social Wellness).
Once establishing long-term friendships, those individuals will always lend a hand to a fellow
friend when you are raising your hand for help with the trust that has developed over time. (In
the end, friendship is.... you guessed it.... Magic)
Arguably, the most important aspect of wellness within life is your physical wellness. So
physical wellness refers to the proper care of our bodies for optimal health and functionality
(Physical Wellness). This aspect of wellness is one that is very sensitive to the decision one
makes including the amount of intake of anything & levels of activities and personal lifestyle
influenced by both society and culture. The underlying issue most individuals have in the United
States is the lack of moderations once again. Binge eating or excessive consumption of foods
with little nutritional value will lead to a multitude of illness. These illnesses include diabetes,
arteriosclerosis, osteoarthritis, fatty liver disease, and many others following from terrible eating
habits and cultural unhealthy cooking styles. Such illnesses are all preventable and reflective of
what you decide to do. Physical wellness is a continuum that is frequently changing meaning that

it can return to normal function with one's willingness to do so. One's body always tells us vital
signs of issues that may arise, so listen to your body when it needs you. Maintaining a balance in
the activities one does including the levels of exercise and hours of sleep will reinforce physical
wellness in the future and a more healthier lifestyle. It is always good to know the steps that can
be taken for one to lead a prosperous life. The amount of perks for being physically well is
unfathomably great, so do not wait until the decline of your health when you can prevent it
yourself.
The four pillars of wellness, which are mental, emotional, social, and physical wellness,
highlights essential faculties necessary in one's long-term health and prosperity in the narrative
of their life. Following these four essential pillars of overall wellness will yield the greatest
source of happiness and the bittersweet fruits of living life to its maximum potential. The method
that you treat life will be manifested itself into the quality of your life. In shorter terms, treat life
with the respect it deserves like one respects themselves.
