SOL 4.4 Study Guide

Learning Goals: The students will:
a.) estimate products and quotients of whole numbers;
c.) divide whole numbers, finding the quotients with and without remainders
d)solve single-step and multistep addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems with whole numbers.

Vocabulary:
Quotient- the answer to a division equation
Dividend- the amount that you want to divide
Divisor- the number you divide by
Divisible- when one number can be divided by another and the result is an exact whole number
Whole Number- a number from the set { 0, 1, 2, 3, }
Estimate- find a value that is close enough to the correct answer (key word: about)
Dividend Divisor =
Quotient

Step 1: Divide: How many times does 6 go into 9? (1)

Step 2: Multiply 6 x 1 = 6 (Write 6 below the 9)
Step 3: Subtract 9 6 = ( Write 3 below)

Step 4: Bring Down the 2 (Make the number 32)
Step 5: Divide: How many times can 6 go into 32? (5)

Step 6: Multiply 6 x 5 = 30 (Write 30 below the 32)
Step 7: Subtract 32 30 =2 (Write 2 below)

Step 8: Bring Down the 4 (Make the number 24)
Sample Questions
Step 9: Divide: How many times does 6 go into 24? (4)
Step 10: Multiply 6 x 4 = 24 (Write 24 below)

Step 11: Subtract 24 24 = 0
When there is nothing left to bring down and you get a 0

you are finished.
