Unit of Instruction: Volleyball Unit Plan

Objectives: Students will learn and understand the rules of play in the game of volleyball. They
will participate to the best of their abilities and practice each technique so they understand how
to perform each skill. Today we will learn the basics of volleyball. They will learn how many
players are on a court at one time, the different rules and regulations, and how important it is to
have teamwork on the court.
Movement: Demonstrate different volleyball movements such as the squat (passing), arm
extension (setting), different vertical and lateral movements around the court
Knowledge: Demonstrate basic understanding of the rules of volleyball
Activity: Forward backward shuffle, side-side shuffle, redlight-greenlight game. Indian run for
teamwork and heart rate
Behavior: Positive attitude and participation to the best of their abilities

Objectives: Students will learn the forearm pass. They will learn how its used in a game and
what the proper form looks like. They will have the ability to practice this skill with a partner.
Movement: The forearm pass. Hands together with thumbs up and pointed towards the ground.
forearms should be facing up and tight with elbows locked but flexible. Legs should be in the
squat position and feet should be able to move easily from left to right. The movement should
be more of a shrugging movement when the arms make contact with the ball, instead of a
swinging motion.
Knowledge: What is the proper form and how is this skill used in a game?
Activity: Partner passing/ Net drill. 2 sets of 4-5 equals one team with the net between each set
of 5. The object of the game is to get as many passes in a row over the net as a team can, the
team with the most passes in a row wins after the timer goes off.
Behavior: Students will demonstrate a positive attitude along with encouraging one another in
the drills and activities. Students will also participate to the best of their abilities

Objectives: Students will learn the set or overhand pass. They will learn and demonstrate the
proper form of the set while learning how the skill is used in a game setting. They will
understand why the overhand pass/set is important in the game of volleyball.
Movement: The set or overhand pass. Hands up, palms facing the ball, thumb and pointer finger
making a triangle above the forehead, looking through the triangle when making contact with the
ball. Use arms and legs to propel and project the ball forward toward target.
Knowledge: What does the proper form of the set look like and why or how is the set used in the
game?
Activity: Setting to self on a spot on the wall. Begin four on four games.
Behavior: Students will have a positive and encouraging attitude towards one another
throughout the duration of class and will participate to the best of their abilities.

Objectives: Students will learn the serve, overhand and underhand. They will understand and
demonstrate the proper form of both serves and understand how and why it is used in a
volleyball game.
Movement: Overhand- perpendicular stance to the net, T-position with ball out in front, dominant
elbow bent back behind head, ball tossed up and out in front of self, server makes contact with
the ball with an open palm at dominant arms full extension. Underhand- ball is in nondominant
hand at the waist extended out. Dominant arm and hand swing forward as player steps forward
with dominant foot. Player makes contact with the ball with an open hand and the heel of the
palm. Movement should be fluid.
Knowledge: Students will demonstrate understanding of the serve and why it is important during
game play. They will understand the different forms of the serve and how to properly
demonstrate them.
Activity: Target Game. Teams serve the ball, one team member at a time, attempting to hit the
target, when they hit the target they gain 3 points for their team, first team to 15 wins. If they
miss they shag the ball and hand it to the next player.
Behavior: Students will have a positive behavior throughout the class and show sportsmanship
before, during, and after the drills and game.

volleyball game. Students will demonstrate sportsmanship and fair play throughout the
tournament.
Movement: Students will demonstrate the serve, the set, and the pass in a standard volleyball
game.
Knowledge:Students will demonstrate the volleyball skills learned in previous classes as well as
rely on previous knowledge reviewed in class to play the game of volleyball by the proper rules
and regulations.
Activity: Review/Warm up/Tournament Play.
Behavior: Students should demonstrate positive sportsmanship throughout the tournament and
should demonstrate the skills practiced in earlier classes. The students will play fair and not
cheat during the tournament play, and will be honest about all calls made. They will hold one
another accountable and will reflect a positive attitude throughout all games.
