Standard 5: Impact on Student Learning

Physical education teacher candidates use assessments and

reflection to foster student learning and inform decisions about
instruction
Assessment is used to check a students progress throughout an activity. Physical
education assessment is different than many other general education classrooms because much of
the assessment cannot be done by taking a test or writing an essay about what students have
learned and accomplished. Physical education teachers must rely on observation assessment to
check the progress of each student.
If an elementary class is learning to skip, a teacher might demonstrate the steps to a skip
and have students slow down the movement in order to perfect it. Without this instruction, a
teacher may see galloping, jumping, or hopping, and students may not know the difference
between these movements. When a teacher sees that students are able to perform the motions of a
skip at a slow pace, she/he may encourage the students to speed it up in order to see the full
movement in action.
At a high school level, a teacher may have the students take a short quiz on the unit of
study before beginning a new unit to see if the students understand the rules of play, materials
required, and overview of the activity they are about to participate in.
