The
ISTE
NETSforCoacheshighlightssixareasforassessingtheskillsandknowledge
oftechnologycoaches.ThesehavebeenespeciallyrelevanttomethisschoolyearasIhave
takenontheroleofanEducationalTechnologyCoachparttimeoncampus.Thefirststandard,
VisionaryLeadership,involvescreatingasharedvisionandstrategicplansforimplementing
technologyintegration.Ithinkitsimportanttonotethatthisstandardisfirst.Withoutavision,a
leadercannoteffectivelylead.DuringtheteacherinserviceinAugust,Isharedwithourstaff
abouttwowaysthattechnologycanfundamentallyimprovelearning,collaborationand
contribution.Myhopewastoinspireteacherstousetechnologyintheirclassroomstodothings
thatcouldnotbedonewithouttechnology.WhileIfeelthatIdohaveavisionforourschool,I
wanttodoabetterjobofarticulatingittoteachersandkeepingitatthecenterofallthatwedo.
Thesecondstandard,Teaching,Learning,andAssessments,laysoutthebestpractices
ineducation,includinginstructionalstrategiesthatareresearchbasedandlearnercentered.
Thetechnologycoachsroleistonotonlycoachteachersinthesepractices,butalsomodel
them.InaprofessionaldevelopmentsessionthatIledrecently,Imodeledtheuseofthreetech
tools:AnswerGarden,TodaysMeet,andFutureMe.AfewweekslaterIhadseveralteachers
comebackandsharewithmehowtheyhadusedoneofthesetoolsintheirclassroom.Itwas
excitingthattheseteacherschosetotryanewtechtoolthatIhadmodeledtoenhancethe
learningforthestudentsintheirclassroom!
DigitalAgeLearningEnvironments,thethirdISTEstandardforcoaches,involves
modelingsuccessfulclassroommanagementstrategiesandsupportingteachersin
implementingthemwiththetechnologyintheirclassroom.ThisisanareathatIfeelIhavea
prettystrongbaseinthroughmyexperienceasaclassroomteacher.Ivelearnedthroughmy
experienceteachingwhatworkswellinengagingstudentsandbecomemoreadeptat
managingadigitalclassroom.
NextisProfessionalDevelopment&ProgramEvaluation,thefourthstandardintheISTE
standardsforcoaches.ThisisanareathatIamveryexcitedaboutinmyroleasacoach
becauseIlovesharingwhatImlearningwithotherteachers!AsIamplanningtechnology
sessions,Iwillpollteacherstoseetheareastheyarewantingtogrowinandtailormy

professionaldevelopmenttowardsthoseneeds.Imnotyetsureofthebestwaytoevaluatethe
effectivenessofthesesessionsandtheirimpactonteachergrowthandstudentlearning.This
isanareathatIwouldlovetoenhanceinthecomingyear.IplantomeetwiththeCurriculum
Coordinator,whoisinchargeofprofessionaldevelopmentforourstaff,andlearnfromher
expertiseinthisarea.
Thefifthstandard,DigitalCitizenship,isanessentialpieceforeducatorsastechnology
becomesevenmoreintegratedintothedailylivesofourstudents.Ourschoolisstillveryyoung
initsintegrationoftechnologyanddigitalcitizenshipishappeningmainlyattheclassroomlevel,
guidedbyindividualteachers.Inthecomingyears,Iwouldliketoseedigitalcitizenship
includedintoourvisionfortechnologyeducationandimplementedinamorepurposefuland
succinctway.Fornow,Ihavebeenhelpingindividualandsmallgroupsofteachers.Irecently
helpedoneteacherplanandimplementaunitusingMinecrafttohelpstudentsmake
connectionsbetweencitizenshipinthedigitalworldandintheireverydaylives.
Andfinallythesixthstandard,ContentKnowledgeandProfessionalGrowth,focuseson
continuallearningtodeepenprofessionalandpedagogicalknowledgeandskills.Ilovetolearn
andbecauseImpassionateabouttechnology,Iespeciallylovestudyingit.Itrytoattend
technologyconferencesandreadarticlesasoftenasIcan,butwishthatIhadmoretimeto
spendonprofessionalgrowth.TheisanotherareathatIwouldliketoworkonthissemester,
improvingintheareaofreflectiononmyprofessionalpractice.Thismastersdegreehas
alreadyhelpedinthisarea,butIwanttotakeitonpersonallyaswell.Mygoalistosetaside
timeeachweektojournalandreflect.
