Characteristics
Tilapia are shaped much like sunfish or crappie but can be easily identified by an interrupted
lateral line characteristic of the Cichlid family of fishes. They are laterally compressed and deepbodied with long dorsal fins. The forward portion of the dorsal fin is heavily spined. Spines are
also found in the pelvis and anal fins. There are usually wide vertical bars down the sides of fry,
fingerlings, and sometimes adults.
Banding Patterns and Coloration
The main cultured species of tilapia usually can be distinguished by different banding patterns on
the caudal fin. Nile tilapia have strong vertical bands, Blue tilapia have interrupted bands, and
Mozambique tilapia have weak or no bands on the caudal fin. Male Mozambique tilapia also
have upturned snouts. Color patterns on the body and fins also may distinguish species. Mature
male Nile tilapia have gray or pink pigmentation in the throat region, while Mozambique tilapia
have a more yellow coloration. However, coloration is often an unreliable method of
distinguishing tilapia species because environment, state of sexual maturity, and food source
greatly influence color intensity.
The red tilapia has become increasingly popular because its similar appearance to the marine
red snapper gives it higher market value. The original red tilapias were genetic mutants. The first
red tilapia, produced in Taiwan in the late 1960s, was a cross between a mutant reddish-orange
female Mozambique tilapia and a normal male Nile tilapia. It was called the Taiwanese red
tilapia. Another red strain of tilapia was developed in Florida in the 1970s by crossing a normal
colored female Zanzibar tilapia with a red-gold Mozambique tilapia. A third strain of red tilapia
was developed in Israel from a mutant pink Nile tilapia crossed with wild Blue tilapia. All three
original strains have been crossed with other red tilapia of unreported origin or with wild
Oreochromis species. Consequently, most red tilapia in the Americas are
mosaics of uncertain origin. The confused and rapidly changing genetic
composition of red tilapia, as well as the lack of head-to-head growth
comparisons between the different lines, make it difficult for a producer to
identify a best red strain.
Other strains of tilapia selected for color include true breeding gold and yellow Mozambique
lines and a Rocky Mountain white tilapia (a true breeding line originating from an aberrant
Blue tilapia, subsequently crossed with Nile tilapia). Most strains selected for color do not grow
well enough for food fish culture.
Identifying the species of an individual fish is further complicated by natural crossbreeding that
has occurred between species. Electrophoresis is often used to determine the species composition
of a group of tilapia.
Origin
Tilapia is a genus of cichlid fishes endemic to freshwater habitats in
Southern Africa. In the past this was a very large genus including all species
with the common name tilapia, but today the vast majority are placed in
other genera.
Tilapias are native to Africa. The fish are part of the cichlid family, in three
aquatic genera, and are found in vast varieties within their native lakes. All
species of tilapia are tolerant to brackish water and, though they thrive
better in warmer waters, they can survive in colder water above 50 degrees.
Most varieties of tilapia are omnivores, and their ability to adapt to poor
water conditions keeps their population flourishing, making them excellent
farm fish. In some states, though, they are considered exotic fish, and
farming them can require licensing.
Different Species
In the past, Oreochromis and Sarotherodon were retained in the genus
Tilapia, but these are treated as separate genera by all recent authorities.[2]
Even with this more restricted Tilapia, there were indications that the
taxonomic treatment was problematic, and in 2013 a review of the group
resulted in the removal of most "Tilapia" species to the genera Coelotilapia,
Coptodon, Heterotilapia, Paracoptodon and Pelmatolapia.[1] With these as
separate genera, only four species remain in Tilapia:[1]

papilla located immediately behind the anus (Fig. 1). In males the genital papilla has only one
opening (the urinary pore of the ureter) through which both milt and urine pass. In females the
eggs exit through a separate oviduct and only urine passes through the urinary pore. Placing a
drop of dye (methylene blue or food coloring) on the genital region helps to highlight the papilla
and its openings
Feeding Habit
Early juveniles and young fish are omnivorous, feeding mainly on zooplankton and zoobenthos
but also ingest detritus and feed on aufwuchs and phytoplankton. At around 6 cm TL the species
becomes almost entirely herbivorous feeding mainly on phytoplankton, using the mucus trap
mechanism and its pharyngeal teeth (Moriarty and Moriarty, 1973; Moriarty et al., 1973). The
pH of the stomach varies with the degree of fullness and when full can be as low as 1.4, such that
lysis of blue-green and green algae and diatoms is facilitated (Moriarty, 1973). Enzymatic
digestion occurs in the intestine where pH increases progressively from 5.5 at the exit of the
stomach to 8 near the anus. Nile tilapia exhibit a diel feeding pattern. Ingestion occurs during the
day and digestion occurs mainly at night (Trewavas, 1983). The digestive tract of Nile tilapia is
at least six times the total length of the fish, providing abundant surface area for digestion and
absorption of nutrients from its mainly plant-based food sources (Figure 4) (Opuszynski and
Shireman, 1995). Ontogenetic dietary shifts of different size classes of Nile tilapia are presented
below.
Commercial Uses
Most tilapia on the market is farmed in East or Southeast Asia. In the United
States, Chinese and Taiwanese tilapia is usually only available frozen. Tilapia
from Central and South America and the United States is farmed using more
sustainable methods than those used in other countries. The tilapia
populations in the Americas are also less vulnerable to pollution.
Tilapia serve as a natural, biological control for most aquatic plant problems.
Tilapia consume floating aquatic plants, such as duckweed watermeal
(Lemna sp.), most "undesirable" submerged plants, and most forms of algae.

In the United States and countries such as Thailand, they are becoming
the plant control method of choice, reducing or eliminating the use of toxic
chemicals and heavy metal-based algaecides.
Tilapia rarely compete with other "pond" fish for food. Instead, because they
consume plants and nutrients unused by other fish species and substantially
reduce oxygen-depleting detritus; adding tilapia often increases the
population, size and health of other fish. They are used for zoo ponds as a
source of food for birds.
For example, tilapia can be farmed together with shrimps in a symbiotic
manner positively enhancing the productive output of both.
Arizona stocks tilapia in the canals that serve as the drinking water sources
for the cities of Phoenix, Mesa and others. The fish help purify the water by
consuming vegetation and detritus, greatly reducing purification costs.
Arkansas stocks many public ponds and lakes to help with vegetation control,
favoring tilapia as a robust forage species and for anglers.
In Kenya, tilapia help control mosquitoes which carry malaria parasites. They
consume mosquito larvae, which reduces the numbers of adult females, the
diseases vector.[56]
