Lesson Plan Template (Direct Instruction)

Teacher: Aurora Sauceda

Subject:
Narrative Writing

Common Core State Standards:

3rd grade Writing 3.3

Write narrative to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive
details, and clear event sequences.
Objective (Explicit):

Students will be able to identify the elements of a narrative piece and write a narrative
using plot, setting, characters, theme, and conflict in the correct ways.
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):
Include a copy of the lesson assessment.
Provide exemplar student responses with the level of detail you expect to see.
Assign value to each portion of the response

Students will be asked to identify the elements of a narrative piece from the story Growing Up with
Tamales. They will be asked to write their own narrative essay about culture they are apart of and will be
graded based on the same rubric.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):
How will you review past learning and make connections to previous lessons?
What skills and content are needed to ultimately master this lesson objective?
How is this objective relevant to students, their lives, and/or the real world?

Students will use their creative reading and writing skills to write their own culture narrative. They must
have a basic understanding of story writing and apply what they learn in this lesson about the elements of
narrative writing to their narrative story. This lesson will allow them to reflect on their own experiences
when deciding on a topic to write about.
Key vocabulary: Narrative, Plot, Setting, Characters, Materials: Book, grading rubric, and handout on the
theme, and conflict
elements of a narrative
Opening (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life)
How will you activate student interest?
How will you connect to past learning?
How will you present the objective in an engaging and student-friendly way?
How will you communicate its importance and make the content relevant to your students?

The students will be asked what they already know about narrative writing (if anything) and what they think
it is. They will be told that the objective of the lesson is to be able to identify the elements of a narrative
piece and write a narrative using plot, setting, characters, theme, and conflict in the correct ways and that
they will be the book Growing up with Tamales.
Students will be told that stories are used in the real world and to use them successfully, they have to
know how to keep their audiences attention, which is where using plot, setting, characters, theme, and
conflict come in.

Teacher Will:

How will you model/explain/demonstrate all

knowledge/skills required of the objective?
What types of visuals will you use?
How will you address misunderstandings or
common student errors?
How will you check for understanding?
How will you explain and model behavioral
expectations?
Is there enough detail in this section so that
another person could teach it?

-First I will ask students to share ideas on what

they think a narrative is and then we will give
them a general explanation of narrative writing.
Narratives are works that provide an account of

Student Will:
What will students be doing to actively capture and process the
new material?
How will students be engaged?

-Students will share their ideas on what they

believe narrative writing is.
-Students will be engaged by helping to identify the
parts of a narrative piece in the story Growing Up

connected events over time. In other words, a

story.
There are many types of literature that are
considered narratives such as novels, dramas,
fables, folk tales, short stories, poetry, etc.
-Then I will read Growing Up with Tamales to
the class.
-Afterwards we will describe each element of a
narrative piece, (setting, plot, characters,
conflict, and theme) and ask students to help
us identify these five elements in Growing Up
with Tamales. I will write their ideas on the
white board.
Setting-the time and place in which the story
takes place
Characters- people, or sometimes even
animals that take part in the action of the story
Conflict-the problem or struggle between two
people, two things, or the main character and
himself.
Plot-a series of events and character actions
that relate to the central conflict
Theme-the central idea or belief in the story
-I will check for understanding by having the
students identify the elements of a narrative in
Growing Up with Tamales

with Tamales and their responses will be recorded

on the board.
-Students will be able to look off of a handout that
includes the five main elements of a narrative story.

Student Will:

How will you ensure that all students have multiple

opportunities to practice new content and skills?
What types of questions can you ask students as you are
observing them practice?
How/when will you check for understanding?
How will you provide guidance to all students as they
practice?
How will you explain and model behavioral expectations?
Is there enough detail in this section so that another
person could facilitate this practice?

How will students practice all knowledge/skills required of the

objective, with your support, such that they continue to
internalize the sub-objectives?
How will students be engaged?
How will you elicit student-to-student interaction?
How are students practicing in ways that align to independent
practice?

-I will ask students if they have read any

narratives recently or to identify their favorite
book and write its title on the handout
provided.
-Then I will ask the students to identify the
different narrative elements in their books and
write them on their charts.
-I will walk around the classroom and watch the
students as they fill out their charts. We will be
ready to answer questions that they may have.
-I will know if the students understand the

-Students will identify a narrative story or book that

they recently read or that they love and write its
title on the handout provided.
-Next students will identify the different narrative
elements in the story, going through all 5 elements.
-Students will be actively engaged in thinking
critically about a narrative that they read and
identifying the 5 main elements in it.
-Students will be prepared to write their own
narrative including all five key elements because
they understand how to identify them in other

content if they are successfully able to identify

the narrative elements in their favorite stories.
-If students struggle to identify the narrative
elements in their stories, then I will review the
meanings of the narrative elements.

How will you plan to coach and correct

during this practice?

How will you provide opportunities for

remediation and extension?

How will you clearly state and model

academic and behavioral expectations?

Did you provide enough detail so that

another person could facilitate the practice?

-Students will be asked to create their own

narrative writing piece based on a culture they
are apart of.
-I will give the class several writing prompts
that they can choose from to write their
narrative piece.
example prompts included on a separate page
-I will give each student a rubric to make sure
that they included all of the necessary
elements in their narrative piece

Student Will:
How will students independently practice the knowledge and
skills required by the objective?
How will students be engaged?
How are students practicing in ways that align to assessment?
How are students using self-assessment to guide their own
learning?
How are you supporting students giving feedback to one
another?

-Students will be able to explore their creativity and

have a chance to write their own narrative story.
-They will be able to work together and talk about
their ideas with other classmates.
-They will be given time to independently write
their story.
-They will be given a rubric to follow so they will no
exactly what is supposed to be included in their
story.

Closing/Student Reflection/Real-life connections:

How will students summarize and state the significance of what they learned?
Why will students be engaged?

-After writing narrative pieces of their own, the students will be able to share their story with the class.
They will demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the lesson by stating the five key elements of
a narrative found in their stories with the class.
-Students will be engaged by helping one another identify the five elements of a narrative in their own
story and in the narrative stories of their classmates that they made up in the short period of time.
