What is SMED?
Sinlge-Minute Exchange of Die
The SMED system is a theory and a set of techniques
that make it possible to perform equipment setup and
changeover operations in unter 10 minutes in other
words, in the single-minute range.

In one of the first application of the SMED approach, Toyota

shortened setup on a 1.000-ton stamping press from 4 hours
to 3 minutes.
Extreme: One-Touch Exchange of Dies (OTED): The
reduction of die set-up where die setting is reduced to a
single step.

SMED was originally developed to improve die press and

machine tool setups, but its principles apply to changeovers
in all types of processes.

Internal vs. external setup operations

Internal Setup :
(IED)

This kind of setup can only be done

when the machine is shut down.
(Example: A new die can only be
attached to a press when the press is
stopped.)

External Setup :
(OED)

This kind of setup can be done while

the machine is still running.
(Example: bolts to attach to the
die can be assembled and sorted
while the press is operating.)

SMED distinguishes two different kinds of setup operations:

The Three Stages of SMED

Stage 3:
improving

Separating Internal from External Setup

by doing obvious things like preparation
and transport while the machine is running
the time needed for internal setup (machine
stopped) can be usually be cut by as much as
30 to 50 percent.
Converting Internal Setup to External Setup
reexamining operations to see whether any
steps are wrongly assumed to be internal
setup, find ways to convert these steps to
external setup
