There are different kinds of soil. We can
describe soil by attributes included but not limited tosmell, texture, color and particle size. Why soil is important Lesson Objective: Students will understand that long ago, artists used materials from nature to make colors for their art. Students will participate in paint making activity and then paint a picture. Students will take summative assessment. Lesson Essential Questions: Do different soils have different purposes? Vocabulary: soil, particle size, texture, senses Assessment: Summative students will identify soil. Students will dictate to teacher or paraprofessional the attributes of 3 different types of soil. Attributes will include but are not limited to.texture (smooth or bumpy) , particle size (small, medium or large) and smell; students may use journal or artifacts when dictating. Georgia Performance Standards: SKE2b. Use senses to observe soils by physical attributes such as smell, texture, color, particle/grain size Safety Considerations: Students will need to wash their hands after painting with soil paint ESOL: Visuals paint, clay, sand, Act out vocabulary words, Differentiation: students choose to use artifacts or journal when dictating attributes of soils. Method: Engage/Extend: explain to students that soils have different uses. That long ago, before there was paint, artists used things from nature to make paint. They used soils, berries and charcoal to make paint. Show topsoil and clay. Ask: What do you think I need to add to the topsoil and clay to make them into paint? Demonstrate adding water by having student volunteers add small amounts of water to soils and mixing. Tell students that they can either, draw a picture and then paint what they have drawn or just begin by painting. Model by showing a
painting and telling a story about the painting.
2. Students will paint a picture. Students will tell their neighbor a story about their picture. Early finishers read science levelled reader Wonderful Earth from science levelled reader set Evaluate: Paraprofessional and teacher will call students over and give summative assessment about soils. (see assessment on next page). Materials: student journals, assessment, paints made from soils, model of painting, paint brushes
