commoninJapanforJapanesemartialarts).SeveralbranchesoftraditionalShorinRyuexisttodayinboth
OkinawaandtheWesternWorld.Whilethereisamoreconcentratedpopulationofpractitionersinits
birthplaceofOkinawa,ShorinRyuKaratehashadmanyelitelevelblackbeltsintheWesternWorldas
wellincluding:JoeHess(BlackBelt),GrandmasterFrankGrant(10thDanofMatsubayashiRyuShorin
Ryu),andGrandmasterJamesSmithey(9thDan).

Shrinryisgenerallycharacterizedbynaturalbreathing,natural(narrow,high)stances,andcircular,
ratherthandirectmovements.Shrinrypractitionerswillsaythatcorrectmotionmatters,beingableto
movequicklytoevadeviolencebyhavingfluidmovementsandflexiblepositionsisquiteimportant,and
thatasolidstructureisveryimportantforpowerfulmoves.Stancesthataretoodeepwillmostlikelymake
bodymovementverydifficult.Anotherofthefeaturesinthissystemishowthestudentistaughttopunch.
Generally,thereisneitherahorizontalorverticalpunchinShorinRyu.Punchesareslightlycantedtothe
inside,withthelargestknuckleoftheforefinger(thirdfromthetip)inverticalalignmentwiththesecond
knuckleofthepinkyfinger.Itisbelievedthatthispositioniskeyinliningupthebonesofthearmand
createsafaster,morestableandpowerfulstrike.
