POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Head of Discovery and Engagement

Department: Wellcome Library

Location: 183 Euston Road

Key objective:

To lead the Wellcome Library’s discovery and engagement programme by developing services,
activities and events that raise awareness of, and enable our target audience groups to engage
with and use our collections, on-site and online.

Main duties:

1. To inspire and lead the Discovery and Engagement team’s contribution to the Library
Transformation Strategy, including resource discovery, user services, interpretation,
outreach and engagement, as well as associated project staff and external contractors.

2. To initiate a programme of evaluation and research to define and understand the needs of
existing and potential target audiences, to develop a framework for measuring the success
of the transformation programme and to act as an advocate for the needs of users in all
areas of our work.

3. To develop the Library’s online presence, taking responsibility for the creation of accessible
and thought-provoking content which encourages our target audiences to understand,
appreciate and make use of the material in our collections.

4. To ensure that the Wellcome Library continues to offer a first-class service to users and to
develop service provision and facilities in the reading rooms to meet the needs of new
audiences as well as existing users.

5. To lead the library’s outreach, communications and marketing activities.

6. To promote use of Wellcome Images, increasing non-profit public use and awareness of
the collection while maximising the revenue potential from commercial users.

7. To contribute to the strategic development of the Library as a key member of the Library’s
Senior Management Team and Programme Board.

8. Any other duties as may reasonably be expected from time to time.

Organisational relationships:

 Reports to the Head of the Library

 Works closely with other Library senior and project managers
 Works closely with Wellcome Collection Business and Operations and Events Managers
 Works closely with Trust Publishing, Communications and Media teams
