WOC Assignment / 2016

DUE: Submit electronically by 5 pm Friday 5th
(then, bring to class on Tuesday, February 9th)
1. Based on your experience, what are key characteristics of a good educational event
for adults?
_It needs to be about something that is relevant to their lives. It should also be
engaging, and should try to allow for active participation in things. _
2. Was the Monday night service a good educational experience? Why?
_yes, it was a pretty average experience. It was cool that they tried to engage us a bit
more by having the pause for us to talk with our neighbor about what we were
thinking and what we had just heard. Then of course communion is more engaging
than a normal service because you are actively participating
3. Which of the mission booths were the most appealing/enjoyable? Why?
__There really wasnt anything particularly special about any of the booths in my
opinion. They were all just representatives telling about their mission. None of them
particularly stuck out to me. It was cool to hear about all the different missions and
countries they are in.
4. Which of the mission booths were the least appealing/enjoyable? Why?
Same as with the most enjoyable, there wasnt any particular booth that stuck out to
me. They all blend together a bit.
5. Which of the Tuesday prayer day activities/services was your favorite? Why?
The symposiums were interesting. I enjoyed being able to pick the topic I wanted to
hear about instead of having to listen to something I wasnt interested in.
6. Which of the prayer day activities/services was your least favorite?
There wasnt any activity that I did that I though was bad. I guess I could say my least
favorite would be the prayer bunch at 8:30. I didnt go to it because it was early on a
day off, and it didnt sound like it would be particularly engaging or active.

Please fill out speaker evaluations on at least 2 of these 6 occasions: Monday AM, Monday PM,
Tuesday AM, Tuesday afternoon, Tuesday PM, and Wednesday AM. Also, NOTE there is
additional information following the second form (page 4) for you to respond to.

_Honestly, He really didnt gain my attention at all. I had a really hard time

MORE INFORMATION TO RESPOND TO. (I refers to you the student)
Now that I have had an opportunity to evaluate an event as an adult learning
event, here are some of the things I think are important in facilitating adult
learning:
1. Relevance to the learner__________________________________________________
2. Engage the learner_____________________________________________________
3. Dont just tell them something or talk at them, encourage them to think about
it for themselves

___
I think that facilitating adult learning is different from facilitating the learning of
children in the following ways:
_When teaching adults you often dont need to go into as much detail when
explaining things. Adults already have enough experience and knowledge to be
able to figure things out as you tell them. You have to be careful that you dont
end up boring them by over explaining. Also, it is important to try and bring in
experiences. It would understandably be more difficult to do this in larger
groups, but there are still plenty of things that most people would have in
common that a speaker can incorporate.
I think that some concepts apply to both the facilitation of adult and childhood
learning, such as
_Relevancy of the subject is key to teaching anyone. If the subject has no
application to their lives, they probably wont listen and learn. Both children and
adults need to be engaged in what the speaker is saying as well. It the speaker is
just rambling on without trying to keep the audiences attention, then no one will
learn anything.
Evaluating this event has raised some questions in my mind concerning adult
education:
It hasnt really raised any questions. It has made me think a bit about the best
ways to engage a crowd.
