PHED 239: High School Module
Worksheet - Chapter 3

Be prepared to discuss in class:

1.
As a physical educator, what are the implications of grouping high school students by
chronological age rather than by developmental level? Give examples.
Grouping high schoolers by chronological age instead of developmental age can cause
problems in class. In high school, there are up to five different levels of developmental age within
any chronological age. There is an age gap in high school of four years, and many different
levels of developmental age. Theres another example in the reading that Seventh graders could
have a developmental age range of 10 to 14 years old. Physical educators must be aware of age
gaps in class, and must adjust lessons accordingly to fit all skill levels.
2.
Share examples (at least one each) of characteristics (physical, social, emotional, and
intellectual) of high school students, and the implications for each trait.
Motor skills and coordination increase due to less growth than experienced in middle school. High schoolers start to
feel more independent and want more freedom. It is important to sometimes let the students choose what activity they get
to do in order to express their own opinions and ideas. Emotionally, most of the students will have finished puberty, and
can now be very competitive at times. It is important as a physical educator to model emotional control and model
appropriate behaviors in class. At this age, high schoolers are more intellectually inclined, so it is important to shift the
focus on why of physical education. Not just games and competition.
