Setting Notes
Setting is the context in which the action of a story occurs.
Elements of Setting: Time, Place, and social environment
that frames the characters.
Settings can be used to evoke a mood or atmosphere that
will prepare the reader for what is to come.
Time, Location, and physical features of a setting can all be
relevant to the overall purpose of a story.
Not every story uses setting as a means of revealing mood,
idea, meaning or the characters actions. Some stories have
no particular significant setting.
Each setting- each particular time and place- comes with its
own sights, sounds, and smells.
The ceptual meaning of time and place can vary in a work of
fiction.
Setting also includes weather. For example, the season
dictates what characters will eat, smell, touch and hear.
Novelist James D. Houston describes the power of setting
when the place is profoundly for a feature of the narrative
that is working on the character somehow upon their lives.
Growing out of the physical environment of a story is
something more various, called the Social Environment.
Era and Location combined with the Characters living and
working conditions make up the Social Environment.
Example of social environment is found in Lopezs story.
Where Foster, a white man and a historian performing
research in his physical environment that consists of the
great, uncharted outdoors, where he is often alone. Cultural
differences, make it unclear how much trust exists in the
relationships. Foster inhabits a social environment
characterized by a particular kind of isolation.
Writers approach setting the way designers use sets for
plays or films. Each object is placed differently in order to
create a desired effect.

Setting Notes

A characters location often shapes his or her identity.

A character who lives on a fifty- acre farm, will develop quite
differently than a character who takes a crowded subway to
work.
Setting can itself be a character. Landscape can entwine
with personality so that is expresses the soul of the narrator.
