Theme: Seed Germination and growth

Lesson Topic: Germination and growth stages of the Lima Bean.

This lesson will require daily observations and a series of related activities across
a 5-7 day time period.

Objectives: Language

- Name plant parts and function

- Express daily changes in the seeds using key vocabulary combined with
descriptive words like: bigger, longer, taller, thinner, and thicker; broken, wrinkled,
cracked, open, hard, soft, wet, and color words… in 4-6 word utterances.

Content

The student will be able to identify the seed/plant parts on the actual
plant/seed and on a diagram or picture

- The student will distinguish changes in the seed during the germination and
initial growth period.

- The student will open a germinated lima bean and identify 4 parts: seed coat,
baby plant, baby leaves, roots, and food source.

- The student will be able to complete a 5 picture sequence of seed growth from
initial seed germination to the first set of adult leaves.
- Learning Strategies: Hands-on activities(garden visit and seed
preparation and examination)
- Share personal experiences and knowledge about gardens, plants, etc…
- Modeling verbal responses – recitation, to increase length of utterances
- Decoding/encoding key vocabulary words using magnetic phonics cards.
Using key vocabulary in sentences.
- Completing word search and crossword puzzle for word identification skills
- Discovery learning through seed dissection and analysis/sharing with a peer
- Daily observations, comparisons, sharing discussions
- Coloring pictures of plant growth and progress
- Typing observations for picture captions
- Picture assembly and labeling
- Sequencing (student colored) plant growth pictures
- Daily repetition and reinforcement

Key Vocabulary: Seed Coat, Seed Food, Stem, Baby Plant, Baby Leaves,
Roots, Water, Sunlight.

(Language reinforced through sight word drill, phonics and word structure
activities.)

(Concepts reinforced through pictures, Q&A, hands-on activities.)

Lima Beans, clear plastic cup, paper towel, water

Crayons, scissors, construction paper, glue

Paper/pencil

Motivation: The students in this class are 50% Hispanic with families very
involved in the agriculture of the Fallbrook area. Gardens and plant care are an
everyday affair for most of these students. This unit was chosen because of the
direct relationship the topic has to their life. Additionally this class has access to
the school gardens and has had prior experience planting and harvesting during
the summer school weeks. Experience with plants is superficial unless academic
content is directly taught in and outside the classroom.

Students will be motivated through sharing their personal experiences of plants

using pictures, boardmaker icons to stimulate vocabulary and language for non-
verbal students, visits to the garden, and tasting items from the garden (carrots,
lettuce…) Finally, a variety of seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, beans) will be explored,
(handled, tasted, compared, discussed) before the lima bean is introduced as the
focus of the unit.

Presentation: This is a cumulative lesson plan with practice and application built
in to the daily format. The presentation, practice, and application features are
embedded into the daily lesson.

Daily presentation starts with review, repetition and routine drills to identify key
vocabulary, restate knowledge and new concepts.

Word identification activities, such as flash cards, phonics cards, verbal

response to Q&A, and typing are utilized daily to increase memory, support
language goals, and curriculum goals. Visual pictures and actual plants are
shown.

Curriculum information is reviewed and new information is introduced through

daily observations of the growth and changes in the seeds. Students sit in pairs to
share and compare each other’s plant. The students expand language skills as
they seek to express their observations. The teacher takes this opportunity to
present new speaking vocabulary by modeling, repeating and rephrasing.

Practice/Application:

Each day one additional related activity will be added to the lesson enabling the
students to complete a product that reflects their understanding.

- word search
- crossword puzzle
- coloring pictures and diagrams
- labeling diagrams
- cutting, gluing, and picture assembling
Review/Assessment: Completed work is shared with the class and displayed
around the room. Assessment of skills measured through verbal and gesture
responses to questions about key vocabulary, and germination and growth
process of the seeds, ability to read key vocabulary words, and explain or
describe completed work samples.

Extension:
This lesson can easily be extended by continuing to document the plant growth
and by planting the seedlings, introducing measurement into the curriculum as
the stems grow, and studying the rest of the plant cycle from flower to seed. The
curriculum and language goals can be extended through children’s literature,
instructional books and videos.
