Duringthetimeperiod17501900thewesternportionofEuropeexperiencedvast
industrialization,aswellasasignificantamountofgrowthofpowercomparedtotheregions
surroundingthem.Thecauseofthisriseofthewestisoftenheavilydebated,howeveritis
consistentlyapparentthatthecauseisrootedintheadvancementsofknowledgethroughoutthe
region.Withoutadvancesinscientificknowledgeandtechnology,Europewouldhavenever
acceptedandenforcedcapitalism,whichalsocontributedheavilytotheamountofgrowthin
Europe.Itisprevalentthatwithoutscientificknowledgeandadvancementsinscientific
technology,theriseoftheWestwouldnothaveeveroccurred.
ScientificandtechnologicaladvancementsenabledtheWesttocreateanindustriallyand
economicallydominantculture.ImmanuelWallersteinarguedthatsincethelatemiddleagesand
thescientificrevolution,modernityhasbecomeanexpressionofWesternculture(Wallerstein
567).WallersteinsargumentconveysthebeliefthattheWesthasgrowntoidentifywith
modernity,whichprovesthefactthatscientificinnovationwasaleadingcauseofWestern
dominance.Wallersteinlaterarguesthattheriseofproductionleadtotheriseofcapitalism,and
thatcapitalismiswhatempoweredEurope(Wallerstein570).ImmanuelWallersteins
correlationofproductionandtheempowermentofEuroperationalizesthecausationofEuropean
dominance.Thisprovesonceagainthattheriseofproduction,stemmingfromknowledge

advancements,helpedtherapidriseofcapitalism,whichalludestotheriseofpowerthat
occurredinlateryears.
MatthewFailsarguesthateachareaoftheworlddevelopsindifferentways,andthatthe
growthofacivilizationisdirectlycorrelatedtothearea(Fails508).Thisassertionsupportsthe
factthattheWestcouldbecomemorescientificallyadvancedthanotherregionsoftheworld
becauseitdevelopedinadifferentfashionthantheEasternhemisphere.Thedifferentstyleof
development,whichinthiscasewouldbetheriseofscientificknowledgeleadingtotheriseof
capitalism,allowedEuropetogainmorepowerbecauseofthedifferenceindevelopment.Fails
laterexplainsthatpoorregionsinEuropewereinitiallyminimallypopulated.(Fails489).This
enabledEuropeanstosettleingreaternumbers,whichlaterfueledthedevelopmentof
institutions.Thus,EuropeendedupwithimmenselymoreprofitableinstitutionsthanNorth
America,Australia,andAsiaduetotheheavyamountofsettlersintheirregion,andtheir
knowledgetocreateinstitutionswiththeselargenumbers.Withouttheinitialadvancementof
knowledgeallowingthemtoknowtosettleingreatnumbers,andsettleinthoseregions,they
wouldhaveneverdevelopedprofitableinstitutions.
Althoughcountriesallovertheworldindustrializedinthelateeighteenththroughthe
twentiethcentury,therewasacleardistinctionbetweentheadvancementleveloftheeastand
westhemispheres.ThewesternportionofEuropeclearlydevelopedmorerapidlythantheregions
surroundingthem.Duetotechnological,scientific,andknowledgeadvancements,theRiseof
theWestwasaphenomenonthatwasinevitable.
