    The141signatories,manyofwhomhavebeenharassed,threatened,torturedorimprisonedbythecurrentUzbekregimefor
    speakingoutagainsthumanrightsabuses,areaskingNiketofollowtheleadofseveralmajorapparelcompaniesthathave
    takenactiontoremoveDaewooInternationalfromtheirsupplychains.
    2Theletter,unveiledatOregonLive.comandtheInternationalLaborRightsForumswebsite,describestherecentdeathof
    18yearoldNavruzMuyzinov,whowasbeatenbypoliceofficersinShahrisabz,Uzbekistanwhenhelefthisassigned
    cottonfieldbeforemeetinghiscottonpickingquota.AccordingtoalettertoRadioFreeEuropefromananonymoussource,
    whosaidhewitnessedtheepisode,theteenagerwenttopickcottonthatdayinsteadofhismother.Feelingsick,heleftthe
    fieldsearly.Ontheroadhewasstoppedbytwopoliceofficers,whoquarreledwithNavruzandbeathim.Theteenagerwas
    latertakentoahospital,wherehediedthatevening.
    3Fordecades,thegovernmentofUzbekistan,underthedictatorIslamKarimov,hasforcedmillionsofchildren,teachers,
    publicservantsandprivatesectoremployeestopickcottonunderappallingconditions.Thosewhorefuseareexpelledfrom
    school,firedfromtheirjobs,deniedpublicbenefitsorworse.Thegovernmentcombinesthesepenaltieswiththreats,
    detainsandtorturesactivistsseekingtomonitorthesituationandcontinuestorefusetheInternationalLaborOrganizations
    effortstomonitorthecottonharvest.
    4DaewooInternational,aSouthKoreanbasedcompanyownedbythesteelmanufacturerPOSCO(NYSE:PKX),isoneof
    onlyahandfulofcompaniesthathavedefiedaninternationalcalltostopusingUzbekcottonharvestedusingforcedlabor.
    5Nikeclaimstobeachampionofhumanrights,saidRuslanNurullaev,HumanRightsInitiativeOfficerfor
    AwarenessProjects.org.ButNikesdecisiontoprotectDaewoosendsadangerousmessagetoothercompaniesand
    damagestheeffortsofUzbekcitizenswhohaveriskedtheirlivestobringjusticetoUzbekistanscottonfields.
    6Nike,whichonlysourcessyntheticmaterialfromDaewooInternational,hasrefusedtoenditsrelationshipwithDaewoo
    inspiteofthefactthatseveralothercompanies,includingH&M,TheLimited,C&A,andMichaelKors,havemademoves
    tocuttieswiththeSouthKoreancompany.
    7Nikewouldapparentlyratherharborcompaniesinitssupplychainthatareprofitingfromhumanrightsviolationsthan
    helpbringanendtoUzbekistansheinousforcedlaborsystem,saidUmidaNiyazova,founderoftheUzbekGerman
    ForumforHumanRights.
    8WearecallingonNiketofollowtheleadofotherapparelandfootwearcompaniesbycuttingtieswithDaewoo,said
