Introduction
Dear Knox County Community Member,
1-865-HEALTHLINE RING exists because greater health for our transitional young
people (12-21-yrs old) with mental illness is a community responsibility. No
question, no debate. With mental health, the fierce urgency of now never has too
much now-ness. No ethnicity, age, sex, or economic status is immune from mental
illness, but young people are especially vulnerable: 50% of all people with mental
illness develop symptoms by age 14; 75% develop symptoms by age 24. The public
health mission we have at hand demands HEALTHLING RINGs distinct, powerful
charge:
1-865-HEALTHLINE RING is a collaborative mental health workshop series
for young people and their families providing education, combating stigma,
and forging access to services
Mental illness is vastly under-addressed. Whats worse, young people with mental
illness are harshly judged through stigma: treatment as others. Stigma is
disastrous. The odds of young people with mental illness achieving healthy,
prosperous lives goes down and the odds of them struggling increases. Moreover,
our entire community suffersKnox County cannot fully thrive unless it seriously
addresses the mental health of its young people.
Although this is worrying, many answers to alleviating mental illness harmfulness
exist: education, community resources, and community relationships that unify
resources and people with mental illness. HEALTHLINE RING has called on the
organizations already involved in our project, and it can always use more. Thank you
for reading about this project. Please contact us if your agency or you would like to
become part of HEALTHLINE RINGs answer to Knox Countys urgent call to health for
our young people.
Lets do this!
In solidarity,

Andrew Calderaro, MSW
