WEEK 6: TUESDAY 8TH March

What What is the issue?

Summary of 20 year trends
The under-consumption of fruit and vegetables in NZ is well documented
through the key results of Ministry of Health national nutrition surveys over the
last 20 years.
Although some improvement in intakes has been shown across this period, there
are still large discrepancies between recommended and actual intakes. Female
intake of both fruit and vegetables is above males intake with 70% of females
reaching the recommended consumption of fruit and 75% of vegetable
recommendation a day. Males are consistently lower with 50% of males reaching
Fruit recommendation and 60% Vegetable recommendation a day.
The data also shows youth (5-24 years old) are struggling to consume vegetables
with only 40% reaching the recommended 2 servings a day. Likewise, Maori and
Pacific populations are consuming less fruits and vegetables than New Zealand
European populations. These results are concerning as they will have long term
effects on the well-being of New Zealanders

EXAMPLE

(Paragraph)

A survey conducted in our school with a selected group of students

produced similar results via both quantitative and qualitative data.
Our results show that only 69% of students are eating the
recommended 3 servings of vegetable although 88% said they eat 2
or more pieces of fruit a day. The increased use of convenience and
fast food and the decline in home cooking has contributed to fewer
meals being prepared from scratch, thereby providing less
opportunity to incorporate fruit and vegetables in family meals.
The results surprisingly showed that over half of the students
surveyed grew vegetables at home or consumed vegetable from a
friend or family members home.
