Topic/Concept/Skill:
The topic of this lesson is to teach students about the Holocaust. Students will be able to
identify key figures from the Nazi Regime, discern the difference between concentration
and extermination camps, explain Adolf Hitlers Final Solution, and choose what they
would have done in the situations given to Miklos Nyszili and Kazmierz Piechowsky.

Related Standard:
USH.5.4, Identify key leaders and events from World War II and explain the significance of
each. (Government)
USH.5.5, Describe Hitlers final solution policy and explain the Allied responses to the
Holocaust and war crimes. (Government; Geography; Individuals, Society and Culture)

Background:
Use prior knowledge of the Holocaust and World War II.
Main Objective of Instruction:
TSWBAT show his/her knowledge of the Holocaust and World War II from multiple
perspectives. They will be able to identify
Teacher Materials/Resources:
PowerPoint, YouTube, and copier for running off quizzes.
Student Materials:
Pen/Pencil and Notebook.
Anticipatory Set (Introductory Approach):
First I will begin the class by reinforcing what the students already know about the
Holocaust and World War II by asking them to speak with a neighbor and then convene
with the whole class. Following that brief discussion I will introduce the lesson with obscure
facts about Adolf Hitler. We will discuss how Hitler, loved Disney and Snow White, was a
vegetarian, and was denied admission to art school twice. (5-10 minutes)
(Verbal/Linguistic, Interpersonal)

Instructional Procedures (Whole Group):

1. Complete Anticipatory Set.
2. I will then begin the presentation by discussing the other groups targeted by the Nazis in
World War II(Ethnic Poles, Soviet POWs, Gypsies, Disabled, homosexuals, Freemasons, and
Slavs). We will then discuss who each group was and why they were persecuted.
(Verbal/Linguistic and Interpersonal)

3. Next we will move to the discussion of the Final Solution to the Jewish Problem and will
discuss the essentials of Who, What, Where, When, and How this was brought about.
4. Following the discussion of who else was affected and the Final Solution we will move to
the story of Lidice. The purpose of Lidice is to show the depth of the Nazi Regimes terror
in order to understand how they were able to consciously kill over eleven million people.
5. After the discussion of Lidice I will have all of the students stand up and recite Hitler is a
Moron to get them up and allow them to stretch for a moment before diving deeper into
such a deep topic. (Bodily/Kinesthetic)
6. I will then move the class focus to concentration camps with the focus on
Theresienstadt(concentration)(Show video https://youtu.be/qEQPjvDXeZY) and AuschwitzBirkenau(Extermination). From here we will discuss the differences between the two
camps, identifying their origins, their purpose, and ultimately their liberation.
7. The next point of class we will transition to a brief discussion of two instances of
tremendous courage. The story of four Auschwitz-Birkenau prisoners escaping by driving
out of the front door of the camp in the Commandant Rudolf Hess personal vehicle and
the choice of Miklos Nyszili to help Dr. Mengele.
8. From here we will conclude the lesson and I will distribute a quiz that will not be taken for
a grade to judge the students knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis,
and their evaluation of the content covered. (10 minutes) (Verbal/Linguistic)
9. Following the quiz students will pass their quizzes to the front of their rows where I will
collect them.
10.I will then go over the quiz with the class by asking the question and having a student
answer, and then elaborate on the answer to strengthen if need be.
Provisions for Individual and/or Group Differences:
There are no identified students in my classroom, but I have some students who are lower
level learners. I will gravitate towards them during the discussion and during the quiz to
make sure that they are on task and that they are understanding the content.
Closure:
After we have taken the quiz and went over it I will ask the class what questions need
clarification and clear them up. After that has been taken care of I will reinforce the main
objectives discussed at the beginning and end of the PowerPoint .
Evaluation of Learning:
I will evaluate the students learning based on their participation in class through the
various discussion options available. I will also asses there knowledge through the quiz
administered at the end of class. For remediation I will work with students one on one
during there GI period to clear up any confusion. If the whole class is not understanding
the content I will create a worksheet and work through it step by step with them to
strengthen the learning.
Independent Practice:
There will be no independent practice for students, since I will not be there for a full 7
more days it would not be logical to administer anything.
