OBJECTIVE:

To determine the temperature at which phase change occurs in the asphalt cement.
APPARATUS:
a)
b)
c)
d)
e)
f)

2 steel balls with 9.53mm diameter weighing between 3.55g

Ring
Ball-centering guide
Ring holder
Bath
Thermometer

PROCEDURE:
1. The surface of a steel plate was covered with grease and two rings were
placed on it.

Figure 1: Grease was applied to the steel plate.

2. Asphalt cement was heated up and carefully poured into the rings to avoid
the cement from spilled out of the ring.

Figure 2: The asphalt cement was poured into the rings..

3. The asphalt cement in the rings was left to cool down for 5 minutes.

Figure 3:The cement were cooling down.

4. When the cement was hardened, the two rings were removed from the
plate and placed in the ring holder.
5. Then, the ball-centering guide was placed on both ring with one steel ball
on top of each ring.

Figure 4: The rings were placed on the ring holder with ball-centering guide
on top of it.
6. The two rings were then placed in a liquid bath with a depth of not less
than 102mm and not more than 108mm from the bottom of the bath.

Figure 5: The rings were placed in the bath.

7. Heat applied to the beaker(bath) was adjusted to increase the temperature
uniformly.
8. Temperature of the water bath and time taken for both steel balls to touch
the bottom of the beaker were recorded.

Figure 6: The balls touched the bottom of the bath as the end result of the
experiment.
