Lesson Focus: Reading number words

General Outcome
Develop number sense.

2. Subitize (recognize at a glance) and name familiar arrangements of 1 to 10
objects or dots.
4. Represent and describe numbers to 20, concretely, pictorially and

Enduring Understandings
The quantity of a small collection can often be determined through
instant recognition or by thinking of it in its parts.
Quantities can be represented in a variety of ways with objects,
pictures, and numerals.
Quantities can be counted and compared using numbers, words, and

How many dots/objects do you see? how do you see them?
How can quantities be shown? how many different ways can you
represent a number?
How can sets and numbers be compared and ordered? how can you
tell if one set is more or less than another set?

Write the numbers 6 and 16 on board ask students to say them.


How do they sound the same/different? Look same/different?
Repeat for 7 and 17, 9 and 19, 8 and 18, 4 and 14.
Do 3 and 13 have any sounds in common? What about 1 and 11?
Repeat for 2 and 12, 5 and 15.

Now going to learn number words for 11 to 20.


1. Write nineteen on board. Volunteer to guess the number. Can you find
the one-digit number hidden in this word? Have student volunteer come
to whiteboard and underline the one digit number hidden in word.
2. Repeat with fourteen, sixteen, eighteen, seventeen.
3. Write thirteen on board. Point out first two letters. What number word
already know with same two letters? Repeat with twelve and fifteen.
Have students share thoughts with elbow partner. Partners then share
with desk group to check answers.

4. Write twenty and eleven. Compare twenty and twelve. Eleven does not
sound at all like its second digit one.
