My Story of teaching English in

Germany
No English or teaching training
Right place-Right time

3 main schools offered some work

After 6 months decided on one main school-not the school that paid the most.
Taught 30 to 45 hours a week as a freelancer
Bosses were happy with me
After two years of freelancing, I asked for a position and got it
n From day one 24 days of vacation plus 11 pub holidays
After another 2 years there was an opening/for a director of studies-head of
the English teachers with a small raise.

It doesnt always work that way

However, you can do certain things to make yourself

more marketable and increase your chances.

Improving your chances

Tons of English native speakers go to Europe
wanting to teach and see the sights.
How can you make yourself more marketable?

Option B
One month TEFL course

With

one month of training you wont know much, but

you will have a few ideas.
There are a lot of course-choose the one where you will
teach at least 6 hours with feedback.
n Cost

$2100 to $3000

Some numbers
More money is unlikely Two scenarios
Bill
(had his own apartment-ate out several times a
week, loved beer in pubs and gadgets was broke
and left Halle in debt)
Bob
(shared an apartment-rarely ate out, loved beer
from the fridge-traveled all over Europe, came
back to the US once a year)

Some numbers
(Remember Former East Germany-lower wages)
$14.50/45 min hour
8:00 to 3:00 = $116.00
Or 11:45 to 3:00 and 6:00 pm to 7:30 = $87.00
(Elsewhere in Germany you can make more, but the
cost of living will be higher too)

Some numbers

(Former East Germany-less money, but the cost of living is less)

Cost of living $1350 to $2600
Earnings $1350 to $2600 1
(Reduce living costs/meet new people with shared flat, with your
own apartment-deposit, notice before you leave, set up utilities and
internet)
Start up costs: $ 2000 to $4000 (depending on you and locationand if you go for the shared flat)

What to expect

Training
(Some

very basic training and observations of

seasoned teachers)

Administration (get your visa-not every school will

help you with this)
If you have no experience the school may start you
out with a bit less and work up to full time.
