Lesson Title: Importance of following directions
Lesson Objectives: Given a lecture and demonstration, students will employ effective
communication with patients during role play activity with grade of 80% or better
according to rubric.
Time (length of lesson): 40-45 minutes
Equipment and Materials needed: visual aids, peanut butter, jelly, bread, plastic ware,
rubric, pen/[pencil

lesson:
CC.3.5.11-12.C: Follow precisely a complex multistep procedure when carrying out
experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks; analyze the specific
results based on explanations in the text.
Technical Standard(s) or Competencies taught in this lesson:
301-Demonstrate effective, abuse free verbal and non-verbal communication.
302-Demonstrate accurate documentation procedures
Introduction: Ask students to write the instructions on how to make a peanut butter and
jelly sandwich. Do not give any further instructions. After completion, of task, collect
the instructions and attempt to make the sandwiches as given.
Body: Communication has 4 elements (draw communication cycle and explain each
element on the board).
Discuss what it means to be a good listener.
Discuss verbal and nonverbal communication.
Students will have class time tomorrow to prepare skits for good/bad communication in
healthcare setting.
Summary: Communication is more than talking to someone else. Communication
