An infection of genital tract which
occurs as a complication of delivery
Decreased in this few years due to
improved obstetric care and
availability of wider range of
antibodies

Vaginal flora in late pregnancy and onset of labor

Doderleins bacillus (60-70%)


Yeast like fungus with increase prevelance of
Candida albicans (25%)
Staphylococcus albus / Staphylococcus aureus
Streptococcus sp. (Mostly anaerobic, GBHS rare)
E. coli and bacteroides group

Remain harmless during normal

History taking antenatal, intranatal and
postnatal history of any high risk factors
for infection
Clinical examination General, physical
and systemic examinations, abdominal and
pelvic examinations
Investigation Swabs, urine, blood, thick
blood film, blood culture, pelvic ultrasound,
CT and MRI, chest X-ray, blood urea and
electrolytes balance
