SurpriseAttackonPearlHarbor:ByOctober1940,AmericanshadcrackedoneofthecodesthattheJapanese
usedinsendingsecretmessages.Therefore,theywerewellawareofJapaneseplansforSoutheastAsia.If
JapanconqueredEuropeancoloniesthere,itcouldalsothreatentheAmericancontrolledPhilippineIslandsand
Guam.TostoptheJapaneseadvance,theU.SgovernmentsentaidtostrengthenChineseresistance.And
whentheJapaneseoverranFrenchIndochinaVietnam,Cambodia,andLaosin1941,Rooseveltcutoffoil
shipmentstoJapan.
Despiteanoilshortage,theJapanesecontinuedtheirconquests.TheyhopedtocatchtheEuropean
colonialpowersandtheUnitedStatesbysurprise.SotheyplannedmassiveattacksonBritishandDutch
coloniesinSoutheastAsiaandonAmericanoutpostsinthePacificatthesametime,AdmiralIsorokuYamamoto,
Japansgreatestnavalstrategist,alsocalledforanattackontheU.SfleetinHawaii.Itwas,hesaid,adagger
pointedatJapansthroatandmustbedestroyed.
DayofInfamy:EarlyinthemorningofDecember7,1941,AmericansailorsatPearlHarborinHawaiiawoketo
theroarofexplosives.AJapaneseattackwasunderway!U.Smilitaryleadershadknownfromacoded
Japanesemessagethatanattackmightcome.Buttheydidnotknowwhenorwhereitwouldoccur.Within
twohours,theJapanesehadsunkordamaged19ships,including8battleships,mooredinPearlHarbor.More
than2,300Americanwerekilledwithover1,100wounded.NewsoftheattackstunnedtheAmericanpeople.
Thenextday,PresidentRooseveltaddressedCongress.December7,1941,hedeclared,wasadatewhichwill
liveininfamy.CongressquicklyacceptedhisrequestforadeclarationofwaronJapananditsallies.
AlmostatthesametimeofthePearlHarborattack,theJapaneselaunchedbombingraidsontheBritish
colonyofHongKongandAmericancontrolledGuamandWakeIslands.Theyalsolandedaninvasionforcein
Thailand.TheJapanesedriveforaPacificempirewasunderway.
TheAlliesStrikeBack:Afterastringofvictories,theJapaneseseemedunbeatable.Nonetheless,the
AlliesmainlyAmericanandAustralianswereanxioustostrikebackinthePacific.TheUnitedStatesin
particularwantedrevengeforPearlHarbor.InApril1942,sixteenB25bombersunderthecommandof
LieutenantColonelJamesH.DoolittlebombedTokyoandseveralotherJapanesecities.Thebombsdidlittle
damage.Theraid,however,madeanimportantandpsychologicalpointtobothAmericansandJapanese:Japan
wasvulnerabletoattack.
TheAlliesTurntheTide:DoolittlesraidonJapanraisedAmericanmoraleandshooktheconfidenceofsomein
Japan.AsoneJapanesecitizennoted,Westartedtodoubtthatwewereinvincible.Inaddition,some
Japaneseworriedthatdefendingandcontrollingavastempirehadcausedthemtospreadtheirresourcestoo
thin.

Slowly,theAlliesbegantoturnthetideofwar.EarlyinMay1942,anAmericanfleetwithAustralian
supportinterceptedaJapanesestrikeforceheadedforPortMoresbyinNewGuinea.Thiscityhouseda
criticalAlliedairbase.ControloftheairbasewouldputtheJapaneseineasystrikingdistanceofAustralia.
InthebattlethefollowedtheBattleoftheCoralSeabothsidesusedanewkindofnavalwarfare.
Theopposingshipsdidnotfireasingleshot.Infact,theyoftencouldnotseeonanother.Instead,airplanes
takingofffromhugeaircraftcarriersattackedtheyships.TheAlliessufferedmorelossesinshipsandtroops
thandidtheJapanese.However,theBattleoftheCoralSeawassomethingofavictory,fortheAllieshad
stoppedJapanssouthwardadvance.
TheBattleofMidway:JapannexttargetedMidwayIsland,some1,500mileswestofHawaii,thelocationofakey
Americanairfield.ThankstoAlliedcodebreakers,AdmiralChesterNimitz,commanderinchiefoftheU.SPacific
Fleet,knewthatahugeJapaneseforcewasheadingtowardMidway.AdmiralYamamotohimselfwasincommand
oftheJapanesefleet.HehopedthattheattackonMidwaywoulddrawthewholeoftheU.SPacificFleetfrom
PearlHarbortodefendtheisland.
OnJune4,withAmericanforceshiddenbeyondthehorizon,NimitzallowedtheJapanesetobegintheir
assaultontheisland.AsthefirstJapaneseplanesgotintotheair,Americanplanesswoopedintoattackthe
Japanesefleet.ManyJapaneseplaneswerestillonthedecksoftheaircraftcarriers.Thestrategywasa
success.Americanpilotsdestroyed332Japaneseplanes,allfouraircraftcarriers,andonesupportship.
