Composition of Functions

The notation f(g(x)) is used to describe the composition of functions.

It means that you plug in the function ___________ into __________ every time you see x.

Example 1: Let () = 2 and () = + 5. Find f(g(x)) and evaluate when x = 4.

Example 2: Let () = 2 and () = + 5. Find g(f(x)) and evaluate when x = 4.

You can use composition of functions to determine whether or not functions are
__________________.
If f(g(x)) = x when simplified and g(f(x)) = x when simplified, then f(x) and g(x) are
____________________.

Example 3: Determine whether () = 2 + 4 and () =

4
2

are inverse functions.

Example 4: Determine whether () = 2 9 and () = 2 + 9 are inverse functions.
