La experiencia que acumulamos tras 40 aos dedicndonos

al mundo de la alta relojera y joyera nos ayuda a crear una
revista cada vez mejor. Les presentamos la tercera edicin de
Saphir Joyeros: ms reposada, profunda y completa que las
anteriores. Confen en nosotros, y si no, al menos escuchen la
recomendacin de los ms sabios: Vieja madera para arder,
viejo vino para beber, viejos amigos en quien conar, y viejos
autores para leer (Sir. Francis Bacon, lsofo y estadista
britnico).
A los ms expertos, aunque utilizando un lenguaje lo
sucientemente sencillo como para enamorar tambin a los
netos, les dedicamos una seleccin de relojes y joyas
pertenecientes a las rmas de ms prestigio internacional.
Tambin forman parte del contenido tcnico de la revista los
reportajes sobre la nueva coleccin de Cartier y el desafo del
Rolex Deep Sea, as como tambin la entrevista a Javier Novo,
el responsable de Franck Muller Espaa.
Evidentemente, tambin tienen un peso importante los
artculos de estilo de vida. En esta ocasin, contamos con un
invitado de lujo: el escritor valenciano Joaqun Camps, cuya
opera prima, La ltima condencia del escritor Hugo Mendoza,
tiene pinta de convertirse en un xito de ventas.

The experience we have gained after 40 years devoted to the

world of ne watchmaking and jewellery helps us create an
increasingly better magazine. We present you with the third
edition of Saphir Joyeros: more relaxed, in-depth and
comprehensive than the previous editions. Trust us, and if not,
at least heed the recommendation of one of the wisest:
Old wood to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust and
old authors to read (Sir. Francis Bacon, British philosopher
and statesman).
To the most seasoned, although using language simple
enough to also seduce the neophytes, we dedicate a section
on watches and jewellery made by the most internationallyrenowned rms.
The technical content of the magazine also includes the
reports on the new collection by Cartier and the endeavour of
Rolex Deep Sea, in addition to the interview with Javier Novo,
the head of Franck Muller Spain.
The articles on lifestyle also obviously have a prominent
position. On this occasion, we had a special guest: Valencian
writer Joaqun Camps, whose debut novel, The Last
Condence of the Writer Hugo Mendoza, seems set to become
a bestseller.
Those with a travelling spirit will also enjoy the magazine, as
we invite them to undertake the adventure of visiting the
Cook Islands. To lovers of good food, we explain the revolution
of Alain Ducasse; and to those who love TV series, we remind

Skeltonal may only be visited by appointment and at night becomes a fun cocktail

En segundo lugar, destaca el aeropuerto de Incheon (Sel), uno

that there are some amazing airfields. Number

los despegues y aterrizajes de los aviones o el Korean Cultural
Street, un lugar muy interesante para conocer de cerca la cultura
tradicional coreana y sus construcciones.
Completa el podio el aeropuerto de Schiphol, situado a 15 Km
de Amsterdam. Acoge una gran cantidad de vuelos intercontinentales, sobretodo a Amrica del Norte. Su oferta de ocio es

Para finalizar, no se pierdan el biergrten del aeropuerto Franz
Josef Strauss (Munich), una explanada arbolada en la que es
posible degustar la afamada cerveza bvara; o el Aeropuerto Internacional de Vancouver, que tiene una interesante coleccin de
arte autctono y una buena muestra de la flora y fauna locales.

Las Bodas de Plata de la pesca de altura
El Club de Yates Pasito Blanco, situado a tan solo 2 km del centro
turstico de Maspalomas, acogi la 25 edicin del Concurso de
Pesca de Altura Pasito Blanco, que este ao ha batido un nuevo
rcord de capturas en los dos das de competicin, con un total
de 30 marcajes.
No solo eso, ya que el certamen, justamente ahora que celebraba
sus Bodas de Plata, tambin ha batido rcords de participacin,
con 35 embarcaciones a la bsqueda del ya clebre blue marlin.
El concurso dur dos das y se disput bajo la modalidad de marca y suelta. Los ganadores han sido los tripulantes del Faelo, un
barco armado por Jos Barbosa y con base en el Puerto Deportivo
de Pasito Blanco. Se suban a lo ms alto del podio tras marcar en
la primera jornada dos blue marlin y uno blanco y cerrar la competicin el segundo da con un picudo azul, lo que les permiti sumar
un total de 1.250 puntos.
En segundo lugar se clasic, in extremis, el Bocinegro, de Jason
Pipe, que logr picar un blue marlin poco antes de las 17.30 horas,
que a la postre le dara la plata. El barco con base en La Gomera
se estrenaba en el campeonato el primer da capturando dos white
marlin, a los que aada uno azul en la ltima jornada, acumulando
un total de 500 puntos.
El Hedonist cerraba el podio de esta 25 edicin del Concurso
de Pesca de Pasito Blanco. La captura de un picudo azul y uno
blanco en la primera jornada le daba el bronce al barco de Manuel
Ramrez, empatado a 450 puntos con el Reel Escape, de Puerto
Rico, y el Cavalier, de Had. La embarcacin de Ramrez se colocaba por delante debido al criterio horario que rige las normas del
campeonato, que especica que a igual puntuacin, el desempate
se desenvuelve a favor del barco que primero hizo la captura.

The Pasito Blanco Yacht Club, located just 2 km from the resort of
Maspalomas, hosted the 25th edition of the Pasito Blanco Deep
Sea Fishing Competition, which this year set a new record for catches in the two days of the competition, with a total of 30 tags.
Not only that, as the event, which is now celebrating its Silver
Jubilee, broke records of participation, with 35 boats in search of
the famous blue marlin.
The competition lasted two days and was held in the form of catch
and release. The winners were the crew of Faelo, a boat skippered
by Jos Barbosa and based out of the Puerto Deportivo de Pasito
Blanco. They climbed to the top of the podium after tagging two
blue marlins and one white marlin on the rst day and concluding
the competition on the second day with a blue marlin, enabling
them to score a total 1,250 points.
El Bocinegro, skippered by Jason Pipe, managed to come in
second place in extremis after catching a blue marlin just before
5.30 pm, which would ultimately earn it the silver. The boat based
out of La Gomera made its debut in the championship the rst day
by catching two white marlins, to which it added a blue marlin on

The Hedonist rounded o the podium in this 25th edition of the

De una forma muy casual, estando en el aeropuerto
de Bergamo por un tema de trabajo. Me vino a la
cabeza una idea un poco mgica, una especie de iluminacin, lo
que los americanos llaman insight. Lo anot, lo dej reposar un
par de meses y cuando lo retom me dediqu a armar una buena
estructura. Vi que tena potencial!
Por qu lo hizo as?
Creo que para sacarle el mximo rendimiento a una idea creativa
hay que dejarla sedimentar. Por eso no me precipit y tampoco ca
en la tentacin insana de ponerme inmediatamente a plasmar en
papel mi idea.
Y luego lleg una nueva aventura: publicarla.
Soy atrevido, pero no un loco. S cmo est el mundo editorial y
me fui a buscar directamente a Lola Gulias, la agente literaria de
Mara Dueas, porque prefera que el no viniera de alguien con
muchos conocimiento. Sorprendentemente, le envi las primeras
90 pginas y enseguida me pidi el resto.
Qu le dijo ella?
Una novela como esta solo quiero moverla entre las ms
grandes. Es un sueo, no me esperaba que fuese as de bien.
Pues ha aprovechado la ocasin, la novela tiene casi 800
pginas.
Bueno, hay novelas de 150 pginas que se me hacen eternas
y que abandono sin llegar al final; otras en cambio tienen 1000

How did you come up with this mystery plot so good at
drawing the reader in?
Very coincidently, while I was at Bergamo Airport for a work
matter. I suddenly came up with a slightly magical idea, a sort
of enlightenment, what the Americans call insight. I wrote
it down, I let it sit for a couple of months, and when I took it up
again, I began putting together a good structure. I saw that it had
potential!
Why did you do it like that?
I think that to get the most out of a creative idea you have to let it
sit. Thats why I didnt rush or succumb to the ridiculous temptation to immediately put my idea down on paper.
And then came a new adventure: getting it published.
Im daring, but not crazy. I know what the publishing world is like

because I preferred to hear no from someone who knew a lot.

Una curiosidad: es cierto que los personajes cobran vida
propia?
Pues no es un tpico, es verdad! Yo lo tena todo muy bien
trazado y conforme iba escribiendo tena que ser ms flexible y
darle cancha a algunos personajes.
No sea polticamente correcto: de entre todos ellos, cul le
gusta ms?
Me encanta Paloma por lo gamberra que es, y aunque sea un
poco freudiano, es una persona con la que me ira de marcha
muy a gusto. Adems, igual que le ocurre a Vctor, ella sufre un
proceso de evolucin personal a lo largo de la novela. He hecho
muchos esfuerzos para hacer entender al lector que aunque todos
tenemos personalidades muy estables, los golpes que nos da la
vida nos pueden cambiar. La verdad, me ha costado despedirme
de Paloma!

I had to tell my girlfriend, because I ignored her at the weekends...
but apart from her, no one knew. What I did keep just to myself
was the agreement with Editorial Planeta. I enjoyed the intimacy of
writing, and I wanted to experience the matter of publication alone
and later give the news to everyone.
Do you remember how you told the news?
Yes, I did it on Christmas Day. My family went from 0 to 100 in an
instant and that acceleration was incredible. If I had been explaining everything I did throughout the year (now Im sending it to
them, now I have a meeting), it wouldnt have been so nice.
A question: is it true that the characters come to life?
Well its not a clich, its true! I had it all well outlined, and while I
was writing, I had to be more flexible and give some characters a
bigger playing field.

The watchmakers sought to achieve
extremely slim finishes for all components, whether for the cannon-pinion
(0.12 mm), the barrel staff (0.115 mm),
or the chronograph gear finger (0.06
mm), as well as finesse for the dial, the
hand fittings and the glass fastening.
The end result is a calibre featuring a 50hour power reserve which, besides being
equipped with the chronograph function,

The unique feature of the chronograph is its
flyback function, which makes it possible to reset
the hands to zero by simply pressing the pushbuttons

Another noteworthy feature of the chronograph is its tri-compax

Throughout its history, the maison, which loves to play with shapes, has created watches that have marked
trends. First came the Santos, square; then the Tank, which was rectangular; later came the round Ballon
Bleu; and finally the new icon: the Cl, characterised by the suggestion of its curves.

importante diferencia: complementa dicha llave con un diseo
de la carrura que aporta una geometra original e
innovadora.
Queda patente en las imgenes que la caja del reloj
no es circular, ms bien tiene forma de un pseudocojn. Como es habitual en ellos, los diseadores
de Cartier han tenido muy en cuenta la arquitectura
y las cualidades volumtricas del reloj y han creado
para la ocasin un perfil arqueado, fluido y muy
ergonmico.
Esa combinacin de asas prolongadas en todo el
eje vertical con el crculo de la esfera es un clsico
de los relojes de pulsera. La diferencia en este Cl
es cmo las lneas conforman la caja para adaptarse a la mueca, hasta el punto que los 40 mm de
dimetro parecen incluso ms pequeos -algo a lo
que tambin contribuye el bisel, liso y redondeado.

Just like it did with the Ballon Bleu, the Cl strikes ones attention
with the design of the crown, which is key-shaped (in French, cl
means key) and is used to adjust the same settings as those on a
conventional watch. However, there is a significant difference: this
key is complemented with a case middle design that makes for
an original and innovative geometry.
It is evident in the images that the watch case is
not circular, but rather has a pillow-like shape. As is
usual for them, the designers at Cartier were very
conscientious of the architecture and volumetric
qualities of the watch and have created for the
occasion an arched, smooth and very ergonomic
profile.
This combination of elongated lugs extending
around the circle of the dial is a classic look for
wristwatches. The difference in this Cl is how the
lines shape the case to fit the wrist, to the point
that the 40 mm of the diameter even seem smaller
which is also aided by the smooth, rounded bezel.
The slightly softened curved shapes ensure that it
rests perfectly on the wrist.
The crown, its big secret
Cartier has a long history in creating innovative
crowns, and the Cl collection firmly embraces this
legacy. This time it is not only one of the defining features of the
watch, but also the inspiration for its name. Cl means key in
French, and the crown unmistakably resembles a key.
The act of resetting the time and date introduces a new gesture to
the world of watchmaking, a gesture that recalls the turning of a
key to wind up a clock, as was done before.
Although the considerable size of the crown makes it exceptionally
easy to grip, functionality is not its only trait. We could say that it is

BMW TwinPower Turbo 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine with 170

one of the gurus in the field of motorcycle customisation. The Italian started with the Ducati Diavel Carbon
as a base to create the Ducati Black Shield, which
uses the design codes of a watch created by Tudor.
The watch is the Fastrider Black Shield, a chronograph
that stands out with its ceramic monobloc case in matte black.
The body is nearly impossible to scratch, but what is its unique
feature? Not only is the case entirely made of high-tech injected
ceramic, it is also produced as a single piece.
Its diameter, measuring 42 mm, is large enough to house an
automatic chronograph movement that builds up a 46-hour power

This versatility is a great advantage, especially when weather
conditions suddenly turn bad. The top, which is hard although
softened with two strips of decorative wood, covers the cockpit
area and the dining area. It is activated through two hydraulic arms
that can be separated and stored once the top is resting on the
windshield. The cockpit can be closed o completely by blocking
the two side openings (at the level of the helm station).
In addition to these two positions, there is a third alternative which
is perfect for when the yacht is anchored or moored. The top becomes a 12 m2 cover over the fore dinette and creates an ample
shaded area for the enjoyment of guests.
The interior
The designers drew their inspiration from other Riva models, in
particular from some successful creations of the 80s and 90s.
This feeling is transmitted through a careful choice of materials
and colours. Wood, steel, leather and lacquered inserts are the
main players.
The stairs to the right of the helm station are used to access the
dinette. It is open area furnished with an L-shape sofa and a coee
table. The kitchen is equipped with a superb range of appliances
and a small bar that is ideal for having a drink or cocktail.
The 88 Miami has four cabins in total. The master suite is amidships, in the area with the most privacy. It features a double walkin wardrobe, desk and vanity area, all of which are decorated with
lacquered blue accents and elm wood.

His accomplishments are evident when looking at an atlas prior
to his travels, like the Mercator map from 1650. On this map, the
southern end of the Southern Hemisphere is represented as an
immense cloud labelled Terra Australis Incognita, a land which the
collective imagination at the time endowed with amazing natural
phenomena.
The atlas of the Frenchman DAriville, published a century later,
took a big step forward, but not because it added discovered
lands, but because it excluded from the map any territory whose
precise size was unknown. Thus, after the three trips, nearly all
questions about Oceania were answered: it was proven that only
a layer of ice surrounds the South Pole and the exact position and
botanical features of Australia, New Zealand and the many Pacic
islands were veried.
Of course, Cooks journey, which we know about from his diaries,
is full of anecdotes and data that corroborate the importance of
his discoveries. For example, in July 1771, the English captain
returned to London aboard the Endeavour without a single death
from scurvy among his sailors, a historical feat that is apparently
due to the fact that Cook himself asked the marine authorities to
give lime juice to all the members of his crew.
With respect to the Cook Islands, it is believed that he himself
claimed them as part of the British crown during his second voyage. The decision, however, may not have been his, since he was
a man of science. It was the rather the British government that
exploited his expeditions to do eldwork and see if the country
could colonize new horizons.
