NURS 440 Week 7 -Change Model

Change is challenging and often times met with resistance I believe that change is a constant
state influenced by internal and external factors. According to Yoder-Wise, 2015 Complexity
theories suggest that change is not episodic but rather an ongoing experience through which
systems adjust and realigns recreating itself continuously.
After looking at models of change, I thought that Beckhards & Harris Change Equation would
fit into my current practice best. Beckhard & Harris Change Equation- D xVx F>R is known to
be one of the simplest powerful change models used. There are 3 factors that must exist for
organizational change to take place including: Dissatisfaction, Vision and First steps. If any one
of these factors are absent it causes Resistance (McCarthy, 2009).
In my current practice we see change initiatives quite often. In my workplace, there is a research
team as well as a committee that looks at policies (Professional Nurse Practice Council). The
research team is a group of nursing professionals who have an interest in data and research that
volunteer their time to improve clinical practice. The PNPC committee is also a group of nurses
who volunteer their time to develop educational opportunities for nurse on this committee each
unit in the hospital is represented and concerns in practice are communicated through these
representatives. In collaboration, they look at current nursing practices that have changed
through research (EBP) and decide what policy changes need to be changed first.
As I look at the Beckhard & Harris Change Equation, it makes it real easy to put into nursing
practice. In collaboration based on research and evidence, the Research team and the PNPC
determine that best practice are not being used therefore ,a change needs to take place to put best
practices in place = (D). In this stage ,they are clear on what they need to change .The research
team along with members of the PNPC share a vision for that change and agree that it is valid
through researched evidence = (V). They share in a vision for the future to improve practice and
patient care to promote positive outcomes for patients. In collaboration with the members of
Research and PNPC they decide what first steps need to take place whether that is a unit or
hospital survey conduct on perspective units or online (F). Everyone is on the same page
understanding that each has a part and that they also need to prepare themselves for change as
well as helping others transition. If anyone of the first 3 steps is absent, resistance is met = (R) It
is important to be an advocate for change through explanation and education.
Looking at these models for change show that change must take place to go from present to
future .In nursing it is essential to make necessary changes that are proven through EBP to
improve the care we provide for those we serve.
