TheWesternMichiganUniversityCommitment

Withadoptionofitsfirststrategicplanin2012,theUniversityembracedthreebasictenetsdevelopedtodescribeits
identityandprovideguidepostsforthefuture.In2016,astheUniversitylaunchesTheGoldStandard2020,arefinedand
expandedfiveyearversionofitsstrategicplan,thosethreetenetsremainattheverycoreofallthatWMUisandaspiresto
be.TheUniversityislearnercentered,discoverydriven,andgloballyengaged.Everygoalthatitsetsandeverychallengeit
tacklesisintendedtomaintainandenhancethosethreetenets.TheGoldStandard2020isaplanningtoolforthefuture
thatispremisedonthatbasicunderstanding.

Asapremier,comprehensive,publicresearchUniversity,WMUwillusethisplantorecruitandnurturetalentedminds
wherevertheywillbefound.TheUniversitystrivestoaddvaluetothelivesofitslearnersandcontinuouslyimprovethe

TheUniversityStrategicPlanguidesthewayforthenextfiveyearsandallowstimeformeaningfulinstitutionalgoalstobe
achieved.Developingthegoals,objectivesandstrategiesthatwillservetheUniversitycommunitybothnowandinthe
future,demandsthattheUniversityundertakehonest,thoroughandongoingexaminationsofthechallengesandrisksthe
