Characteristics of a
Nontraditional Learner

A nontraditional learner is a student who has entered

society as an adult and then reentered college.

Adult learners usually have many life experiences and

have a need to know, and they are often highly
motivated to learn as it relates to career growth and
personal advancement (Hays, 2014, p.1).

Nontraditional learners can be back in the classroom

for a multitude of reasons. These might include a desire
to grow in their place of employment, personal
edification, or to learn skills that will have an impact on
society (Hays, 2014, p.1).

Adult Centered Curriculum

The learners needs will be met with an information

literacy curriculum that is relevant, applicable and
have a real life focus (Hays, 2014, p. 4).

Problem based learning and instruction will be

implemented so that students will become more selfdirected and be able to seek new or additional
