Song
Song title:
Breezeblocks

Artist:
Alt-J

Genre:
Indie pop/rock

What are the conventions of music videos from this

genre?
Indie genre music videos are known to be quite low budget, the
main settings are usually in studios, cities, parks, tunnels etc.
These are the places which can be accessed easily and they
can create mystery. The settings are kept simple because it is
typical of indie pop/rock music videos to focus more on the
artists and their performance.
Its common for indie pop/rock genre to include live
performances in their music videos as it is a way to focus on
the artist and their actual talents, this is a way to promote. Its
popular for this genre to also include a narrative instead or as
well as a performance, this is to tell a story and it helps the
audience to relate to the lyrics of the song. Narrative has
become very popular in the indie genre because it holds
peoples attention better compared to a live performance music
video. It makes it more interesting as there are more variety of
shots used. Most camera shots used in indie genre music
videos would be close up shots as it introduces and advertises
the artist. Close ups highlight the talents, passion and emotion
of the artist. Crane shots are also popular when filming live
performances as it allows different angels, long and wide shots
are used as establishing shots to set the scene of the narrative.
Editing is very important as it makes the music video more
interesting. Most indie genre music videos would have special

effects to create an effect that makes the audience feel as if

they are in the music video. For example Foals Mountain at
my gates music video, their music video was shot with a GoPro
and you can watch the artists live performance in 360 degrees.
How are you going to meet these conventions in your
video?
Style (in-concert and as live footage; animation (stop motion,
digital); interpretative; narrative; impressionist; surrealist;
pastiche; parody; referencing; homage)
In my own music video I will use a narrative convention
because I will be telling a story that has relation to the lyrics.
Costume
I have chosen not to have any costumes in my production
because I think that it either wont make sense or the focus will
be taken off the storyline. My characters will be wearing
everyday teenage clothing. This goes with the scenes of the
song and reflects the genre.
Lighting
I will be filming in three different locations in Reading so all
lighting used will be natural and also dependant on the
weather.
Locations
My filming will be based in Reading in three main locations.
These will include a train station in the same area.
Shot types
My filming will include many different shots that relate to the
indie genre. I will shoot long shots, close ups and mid shots to
create emphasis on the location and emotion. I will be filming
many tracking shots following the main character.

Research
What music videos have you watched to research your
genre?
I have watched music videos by Swim Deep, Bombay bicycle
club and MGMT. All these artists are in the same indie genre as
the artist and song that I have chosen. They all has the same
main conventions that are used in indie music videos and it
has helped me to decide exactly where and what I should film
for my music video.

How have these videos influenced the decisions made?

Include screen shots of the key influences
They have influenced me because I like the simplicity and style
of them. I wanted to choose a song and create my music video
from this genre because I like how the music videos are never
too mainstream and typical music videos with large budgets. I
wanted mine to focus on a story and have a cool style and
effect to it just like other music videos from this genre.

Lyrics
He may contain the urge to run away
But hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks
Citrezene your fever's gripped me again
Never kisses all you ever send are fullstops, la la la la
Do you know where the wilds things go
They go along to take your honey,la la la la
Break down now weep build up breakfast now
Let's eat my love my love love love, la la la la
Muscle to muscle and toe to toe
The fear has gripped me but here I go
My heart sinks as I jump up
Your hand grips hand as my eyes shut
Ahhh ahhh ahhh ah ah, ahhh ahhh ahhh ah ah
Do you know where the wild things go
They go along to take your honey, la la la la
Break down let's sleep build up breakfast now
Let's eat my love my love love love, la la la la
She bruises coughs she splutters pistol shots
But hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks
She's morphine queen of my vaccine my love my love love love, la la la la
Muscle to muscle and toe to toe
The fear has gripped me but here I go
My heart sinks as I jump up
Your hand grips hand as my eyes shut
And ahhh ahhh ahhh ah ah, ahhh ahhh ahhh ah ah
Ahhh ahhh ahhh ah ah, ahhh ahhh ahhh ah ah
She may contain the urge to runaway
But hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks
Germaline disinfect the scene my love my love love love
But please don't go I love you so my lovely
Please don't go, please don't go, I love you so, I love you so
Please don't go, please don't go, I love you so, I love you so
Please break my heart, hey

Please don't go, please don't go, I love you so, I love you so
Please don't go, please don't go, I love you so, I love you so
Please break my heart, ah ha
Please don't go, I'll eat you whole
I love you so, I love you, so I love you so
Please don't go I'll eat you whole
I love you so, I love you so, I love you so, I love you so

Meaning of the song

Does the song have a meaning? If so, what is it?
The band themselves said that the song is based on Where the
wild things are. Its about loving someone so much youd be
willing to hurt yourself or hurt them to keep them forever. The
band said that they wrote an abstract song about an abstract
topic, obsessive love.

How will your visuals relate to the song? (Illustrate,

Amplify or Disjuncture)
My visuals focus on a girl on her journey through Reading with
three specific people following and always looking at her. At the
end of the video the three people finally corner her then the
video ends by closing up on her. These people want her on her
own, they dont want anyone else to have her. They want her
for herself but she cant escape from them.

Description of what will happen in your video inc.
camera movements, angles etc
The music video starts with a close up shot from behind Ellie as she start
walking through the town, at the same time as the beats of the song three
other girls show up staring at her. Ellie doesnt notice them and carries on
walking.
One of the girls sees Ellie coming through and calls the other two to tell
them, Ellie walks through under the bridge and the camera pans to the
three girls watching her from on the bridge. (Panning wide shot)
Ellie carries on walking to where she is going and suddenly these girls are
standing beside her staring again, this time she stops and notices them.
Ellie walks away but what she doesnt know is that the girls get up and
follow her. (Wide shot)
Ellies buying something from a shop and turns to leave and the girls are
still watching her from the side.

When Ellie is on her way through the train station the girls are just a few
feet behind her following. They stalk her down the escalators and into the
train station waiting room. Ellie texts someone telling them that she thinks
that she is being followed and as her train arrives they get on it too. They
do not take their gaze off of her.
They sit close to her on the train and continue to stare, Ellie gets an
unknown phone call but no one talks so she hangs up.
When she gets off the train she is constantly looking around seeing is
anyone is still there watching and following her. She starts to walk down
an ally way and through to the park and then she turns around and gets
cornered by these girls and cant get help.

(Throughout the song are sharp beats that the footage

is cut to match)
