Lack of preparation for the workplace

Being given more dangerous jobs

Feeling of invincibility

Unwillingness to ask questions

PRACTICE NOTE TAKING SKILLS

A job is a specific assignment of work that includes duties and
responsibilities. Usually a job is described by naming the major task and
giving the location and name of the business where it takes place. For
example, a person can have the job of being a riding instructor at the
Riverside Stables.
An occupation is a specific collection of duties, activities, and responsibilities
that can be performed in a variety of job settings and locations. The name of
the occupation describes this collection. For example, being a cashier at a
specific convenience store is a job, but that person and all others who are
cashiers have the same occupation.
A career is the sum of a persons life experiences. It can include education,
paid work, unpaid work, parenting, volunteer work, hobbies, leisure activities,
and retirement. It is the total picture of the roles a person experiences in life.

Your Portfolio
Demonstrates professionalism
Organizational skills
Planning skills
Provides proof of success and knowledge
Can easily be altered and changed as you gain new knowledge, skills
and abilities
This is a tool that you can alter for ANY job/career you have in your
lifetime.

Cover Page
This will simply say:

Personal Portfolio
of your name

Contents or Index (you choose)

This allows potential employers to easily search through your portfolio
for things most important to them.
You create a rough draft including everything that needs to be in your
portfolio, then add page numbers before you submit your completed
portfolio!

Statement of Ownership
You may choose whichever statement MOST applies to what you are
including in your portfolio (i.e. if you are applying for a job in the
medical field you probably wont include artwork, photos or drawings)

Personal Profile
This is a short paragraph that summarizes the most important skills,
abilities and qualifications you have for the job you are applying for.

Job Posting
Include the job posting so that you can refer to it while creating your
portfolio. This enables you to be specific and helps you include the
most relevant information! ALSO make sure you follow specific
instructions!!! For example, if it asks you to email your resume, you
wouldnt bring it into the office in person.

Cover Letter
Your cover letter will be DIFFERENT for every single job you apply
for !!!
Please follow along on the board and make notes on cover letters. You
do NOT have to actually create one, just include a good template in
your final portfolio.

Resume

References
This is a list of individuals that you have approached and ASKED if you
could give their information to a possible employer. They should have
good things to say about you as an individual if an employer contacts
them and asks about you.
You do not need to include these, just create a template. You should
always have 3 references. These people could be past employers,
coaches, teachers, someone you volunteered for

Education
This is where you would include high school/post secondary
transcripts, and a copy of your diploma/degree.

Reference Letter
This is a letter that will be written by a former employer or mentor. It is
a good idea to ask them to include specific skills, knowledge and
abilities with examples to increase usefulness.

Community Involvement
This is where you can showcase your volunteer work. All volunteer
work is important!!! This shows a commitment to your community.

Associations and Memberships

These are PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS AND MEMBERSHIPS!
They are NOT things like gym memberships.
You could include things like 4H, young liberals membership, any
youth group

Work Samples
You wont know what these look like yet, but you will have to include
them in the future.

Work Philosophy
This is where you sell yourself and let your potential employer know
you REALLY REALLY want this specific job.
Write in some values, and specific skills (value dedication, good work
ethic)
Let them know that you will always try to improve and be better at
your job
Let them know you are always willing to learn more about the field you
want to work in

Career Goal

I would like to obtain a position with _______. My passion for ______ and
dedication has been shown through ____________. I would be a great
asset because of ____________.

Values
Values statements are very personal and job specific. You need to
choose values that are essential to the job AND yourself.
I.e.
That commitment to improving student learning is an on-going
endeavor.
That lifelong learning is invaluable and should be instilled in youth.
That personal compassion and dedication to education is essential to
student success.
