CONTINUATION OF FINAL EXAM PROBLEMS

(URBAN & REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION

PLANNING)
PROBLEM 6:
Given the difference in the generalized costs of bus and car modes to
be negative two (-2) pesos, find the bus and car trips for 1000 trips.
Solution for Problem 6:
Given: U1-U2=-2, 1000 trips
P1= 1/[1+e(U1-U2)]= 1/[1+e(-2)]= 0.880797078
Tijmode = Tijchoice x pi mode = 1000 x 0.880797078= 881 trips

PROBLEM 7:
Utility functions of CAR, PUV and PUB modes are estimated to be -3.5,
-2.6 and -2.5, respectively what is the exponential utility functions for all the modes?
Resulting modal split among the modes for a 1000 trips between a pair of zones (i, j).

Exponential function: f(Cij m)=e(-Cij m)

f(Cij CAR)= e(-3.5)= 0.030197
f(Cij PUV)= e(-2.6)= 0.074274
f(Cij PUB)= e(-2.5)= 0.082085
Linear form: pimode = f(Cij m)/ f(Cij m)
piCAR = 0.030197/0.18655596 = 0.161868
piPUV = 0.074274/0.18655596 = 0.39813
piPUB = 0.082085/0.18655596 = 0.440002
For Tijmode = Tijchoice x pimode
TijCAR= 0.161868 x 1000 = 162 trips
TijPUV =0.39813 x 1000 = 398 trips
TijPUB = 0.440002 x 1000 = 440 trips

PROBLEM 8:
Two routes serve a busy corridor with a traffic demand of 6000
vehicles during the peak hours. Performance functions of route 1 is t 1= 4 + 5(x1/c1) and
that of route 2 is t2= (x2/c2) where ts are minutes and flows (xs) and capacity (cs) are
in thousands of vehicle per hour. Initially, the capacities of routes 1 and 2 are 4400vph and
5200vph, respectively. If a route reconstruction project cuts the capacity of route 2 to
2200vph, how many additional vehicle hours of travel time will be added to the corridor
assuming that the user equilibrium conditions hold?
Solution for Problem 8:
Given:

t1= 4 + 5(x1/c1) and t2= (x2/c2)

C1= 4400vph and c2= 5200vph
Traffic demand= 6000 vehicles
