LESSON
Students will come into the classroom and will be asked to silently read the sentences that
are on their desks. All instructions will be written on the White Board.
The sentences will be:
You are in English class.
You will be in English class.
You were in English class.
After students have had 1 minute to read the sentences, they will have to individually copy
the sentence and put it in the correct category on a chart that will be given to them. The
chart will have 3 sections- past, present, and future. Students will have 5 minutes to do this
and there will be a timer on the board.
Once students have finished sorting the 3 sentences, the teacher is going to ask:
How did you categorize the sentences?
Where do you think each one belongs?
The teacher will pull up a chart on the SMART board and will ask students to come up and
put the sentence in its correct place.
The teacher will explain to the class, The reason why I am having you sort these sentences
is because we are going to be looking at verb tenses- past, present, and future. I have
noticed in your writing that a lot of students are inconsistent with their verb tenses.

10 15
Minutes.

Now in groups of 3 (that have been pre-made by the teacher) you are going to read the
passage that is on the SMART board and identify the action words/ verbs that are in the
passage. Once you have identified them, one person in the group (who I will assign) is
going to write them down on the piece of paper that is on your desk.
The passage will say the following:
The dog saw the cat. He ran after him down the driveway and jumped on the cats back.
The cat screeched and clawed at the dog. Poor old dog! He got a big scratch on his nose
and he raced back home.
The verbs that students will have to identify are:
Saw, ran, jumped, screeched, clawed, raced
Students will have 8 minutes to do this. There will be a timer on the board.
After the time is finished, the teacher will re-focus the class back on her and say,
Now that you have found the verbs, we are going to underline them on the SMART board.
But before we do that, can someone tell me what tense this passage is written and how do
they know?
The teacher will allow for 1 minute of wait time.

TIME

30 -45
Minutes

LESSON
The teacher will choose 6 different students to come up to the board and underline the
verbs.

After the activity is finished, the teacher will then explain to students that we are now going
to be going around the room to complete learning centers. There will be 6 learning centers
and the students will have 5-8 minutes to complete each center. There will be a timer on the
SMART board, so students know when the time is up and they have to rotate. The groups
will be 3-4 and will be pre-made by the teacher.
The teacher will always stand on the outside of the center, never with their back to
the students, so she is always in control and aware of what is going on.
All of the instructions will be posted on a piece of construction paper at each center.
Center 1:
SMART board: Students will have a new chart and verbs on the board. They will have 5
minutes to sort them into their correct categories. One student will be in charge of the
present tense, future, tense, and past tense.

Center 2:
Students will have 6 sentences that they have to read on the worksheet and will have to
highlight the incorrect verb tenses and then re-write the sentence with the correct verb in
the box below.
Sentences:
1. The girls sweeped the floor after school.
2. Ms. Jamie falled down the stairs.
3. Our class runned around outside.

TIME

LESSON
4. Mom drived us to the store to buy orange juice.
5. My brother drinked all of my water.
6. I hate when I have to cleant my room.
Center 3:
Students will have to match the action word to the pictures that are in front of them on a
piece of Bristol board.
Action words:
Look, Yell, Listen, Write, Read, Eat, Sit, Run
Once students have matched the words to the picture, they must write a sentence about the
picture. There must be two past tense sentences, two present tense sentences, and two
future tense sentences.
Center 4:
Students will have a passage and an envelope of words that are mixed up in past, present,
and future tense. They will have to find the correct word in the envelope and place it on its
appropriate place on the worksheet. Once students have finished completing the worksheet,
they will have to read it out loud.

15
minutes

Center 5:
Students will get to work together on the iPad to complete a verb quiz.
Center 6:
Students will have to complete a worksheet, where they have to match each present tense
verb with its appropriate past tense verb. Students will work on the worksheets individually.

After students have completed at least 4/6 of the centers, they will be asked to return to
their desks quietly. Once students have sat down, the teacher will explain to them that they
are now going to write a paragraph (5-7 sentences) on either a topic that occurred/occurs in
the past, present, or future. On the title of the writing activity, students will have to indicate
which tense that theyre using in their title. Students will have 15 minutes to complete this
and there will be a timer on the board. Once students have finished they will be handing
their writing in to the teacher to be assessed.

ACTIVITY

Differentiation:
Since there are three students in the class who work directly with the Child Care Worker, I will
have them placed in a group together for the centers. This is easier for the Child Care Worker to
monitor the students behaviour and make sure that they are all on task. I will also be circulating
the classroom at all times to ensure that all students are on task and working well with one
another.

Evaluation:
In order to know if the lesson has been a success, and, who are the students who understand,
partially understand, or do not understand, the students will be required to hand in their
written response at the end of the class. As well, the teacher will be doing on going assessment
during the lesson to see who is participating, as well; the teacher will look at who is completing
the tasks correctly at the centers, as this will also tell if the learning outcome is a success.
