Writing Wednesday: Introduction Paragraphs
Directions: Underline and label the hook, the roadmap, and the thesis in each paragraph. Then, give the
introductions a grade out of ten and provide a reason for that grade.
Every day, millions of teenagers spend between six and eight hours in Americas high schools.
They sit at their desks, listen to their teachers, and do their school work. In some of these schools,
however, they are also forced to dress in school uniforms. School officials explain that students should be
treated the same in every way possible, including their clothes. Additionally, many supporters of school
uniforms state that students should focus on expressing their personalities more than their clothes. Lastly,
many administrators state that school uniforms would be a cheap and easy way to clothe students. These
reasons do not justify the use of uniforms on a complete population of students. In American high
schools, students should not be forced to wear uniforms because they take away a students sense of
individuality, they do not allow for self-expression, and they absolutely do not save families any money.

Due to the widespread use of the Internet and cellular phones in modern times, many students
have reported being victims of a type of harassment called cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is a form of
communication in which a person uses technology to threaten or ridicule another person. It can be as
simple as a text message threatening to beat up someone, or it could be as complex as developing a
Facebook group to spread rumors about all of the students in a school. Students who report being
cyberbullied have stated that they are less likely to make new friends or speak to others at school.
Additionally, this kind of harassment impacts how students process emotions and thoughts as well as their
ability to focus in class. Lastly, students who have been cyberbullied report physical effects such as
stomachaches, headaches, and self-harm. School administrators need to develop detailed consequences
and response plans for students who participate in cyberbullying because of its impact on students social,
mental, and physical health.
