byF.ScottFitzgerald,agreatemphasisisputonthelivelinessofthe
1920s,andmoresoonanewideacalledtheAmericanDream.Thisdream,asFitzgerald
believesandpointsoutinhisnovel,isemptyandrealisticallyunattainable.Inthelastfour
paragraphsofthenovel,FitzgeraldsumsuphistakeontheAmericandreamthroughNick
CarrawaysfinalthoughtsaboutGatsbyandtheEastEggWestEggsetting.

Inthefirstofthefinalfourparagraphs,NickstopsbyGatsbysincoherentfailureofahouse(p.
192)onelasttimeandseesthatthereisanindecentwordscribbledonthewhitestonestepsof
themansion.Heabrasivelyerasesthewritingwithhisownshoeandmakeshiswaytothebeach
fromthere.ThispictureisverysymbolicofaphenomenonrelatedtotheAmericanDream.
Whenpeopleregardanideasuchasthistoahighstandard,anythingexternalthatdisrespectsits
perfectioncausesanxiety.Nickserasureoftheobscenewordonthewhitestoneissimilartothe
waypeopleacttowardthingsthattheywanttopreserveasbeingperfect.Whenpeoplehavea
utilitarianindividualisticoutlookonlife,suchaswhenseekingouttheAmericandream,
anythingthatgetsinthewayoractsasahindrancetoonesideaofsuccessorperfectionneeds
tobeerasedtopreservethebeautyofit.GatsbyandTomBuchanansperceptionofDaisyislike
this.GatsbyreligiouslydevotedhissuccesstoDaisy,whileTomwaswillingtohurthismistress
forspeakingwordsagainsthisperfectDaisy.

Inthesecondofthelastfourparagraphs,Nicksprawlsoutonthesand,observingaferryboat
movingacrossthecurrent.Hethenwatchesthemoonandbeginstoimagineeverythingmelting

away.Heimagineswhattheislandprobablylookedlikeandhowbeautifulitmusthavebeen
whenitwasstillnewtoitsfutureAmericaninhabitants.Nickgoesontothink:foratransitory
enchantedmomentmanmusthaveheldhisbreathinthepresenceofthiscontinent,compelled
intoanaestheticcontemplationheneitherunderstoodnordesired,facetofaceforthelasttimein
historywithsomethingcommensuratetohiscapacityforwonder(p.192).Thisdescriptionis
verycharacteristicofGatsbysperceptionofDaisy.Throughoutthestory,Gatsbysgoalwas
Daisy,butnotnecessarilythepossessionofher.Whathewassubconsciouslyseekingwasthe
wonderfulfeelingthatheexperiencedwhenhewaswithherbackintheday.Thefeelingwasso
blissfulthathewanteditrelived,butinreality,Daisycouldneverhavemeasureduptothe
standardofGatsbysimagination.WhatGatsbyandDaisyhadinthepasthadpassedandcould
onlyberelivedinthememoryofit.

Inthesecondtolastparagraphofthenovel,Fitzgeraldaddressesthebeyondreachnatureofthe
AmericandreamwhenhesaysthatGatsbydidnotknowthatitwasalreadybehindhim,
somewherebackinthatvastobscuritybeyondthecity,wherethedarkfieldsoftherepublic
rolledonunderthenight(p.193).GatsbyworkedhiswayuptotrytoearnDaisyandalways
seemedsoclosetohavingher,buthedidnotknowhowpointlessthiswasuntiltheendwhenhe
realizesthatshedidnotliveuptohisdreamofwhohewantedhertobe.Intheend,Daisyis
loyaltoherhusbandTomandrunsoffwithhimtothewest,totallydisregardingGatsby.The
realityhitGatsbyhardandbrokehimsomuchthathejuststoppedtrying,whichresultedinhis
death.

Inthelastparagraph,Fitzgeraldmakeshisfinalstatement:
Gatsbybelievedinthegreenlight,theorgasticfuturethatyearbyyearrecedesbeforeus.It
eludedusthen,butthatsnomattertomorrowwewillrunfaster,stretchoutourarmsfarther.
AndonefinemorningSowebeaton,boatsagainstthecurrent,bornebackceaselesslyinto
thepast(p.193).
Here,NickincludestheaudiencebymakingashiftofpersonfromGatsbytowe.Thisgives
thestorythecongruitythatFitzgeraldwantedtoarticulatebecauseitshiftsourfocusfrom
GatsbyagreaticontoGatsby,amanwhoisjustlikeoneofus.Thisshowsthatwecanbe
similarlytakenbyadreamjustaseasilyasGatsbyhadbeen.Thislastparagraphspeakstous
whocanpotentiallybetakenoverbythegreenlightsneverendinginvitationtoachasingafter
thewind.

TheAmericanDreamisjustadream.Itisanideathatfreedomhungrypeoplehadmadea
prioritytoturnintoreality.Itisjustadreamthatsparksadesiresointenseinitsfalsepromiseof
powerandfreedomthatitisputonapedestalanddeprivespeopleoftheirultimatetrust.
The
GreatGatsby
depictstheAmericanDreamasanemptypursuit,andF.ScottFitzgeraldexecuted
hisfinalparagraphswellenoughtoarticulatethis.Intheend,wecanunderstandthatnobodyis
perfect(noteventhosewhoseemtohaveeverything),thepaststaysinthepast,wecannotcatch
uptosomethingthatisntthere,andifweentertainthisemptydream,wewilljustendupa
Gatsby.
