Integration of Learning Outcomes

a. Students will read about famous African-American historical figures and
complete a worksheet answering questions about them.
Standards
a. 8.3.1.A Identify Americans who played a significant role in American history.
Anticipatory Set
a. Ask the students if they remember anything about Harriet Tubman or Rosa Parks
that we talked about during centers or if they know of any other famous AfricanAmericans.
b. Take responses from the students.
Procedures
a. Pass out the Black History Month Scavenger Hunt worksheets out to each student.
b. Split the students into five teams with four members in each team.
c. Tell the students that they are going to be travelling around the room to each of
the posters and reading about famous African-Americans. They will split up the
questions with their group and answer them as they walk around the room. Then,
they will regroup and share with their group members.
d. Instruct the students to work quietly and move safely around the room. Give them
time to work.
Differentiation
a. Divide the members of the Orange Group among the other students.
b. Make sure each group has at least one member of blue or green group.
Closure
a. Go over the answers to the worksheet with the class.
Formative/Summative Assessment of Students
a. Students will be assessed through observation to check whether they are able to
complete the activity, focus on the task, and move around the room safely.
b. Students will be assessed on their mastery of content when the worksheet is gone
over at the end of Content.
Materials/Equipment
a. Black History Month Posters (4)
b. Scavenger Hunt worksheets (22)
Technology
a. N/A
Reflection on Planning
a. The success of this activity will hinge on my ability to manage the classroom
effectively. If I cannot keep the students focused and engaged, things will quickly
devolve into chaos with twenty students running around the room.
Reflection on Instruction
a. I was surprised during this activity by just how much the students enjoyed
themselves. Despite being split into groups, they worked together as a class,
pointing each other to the correct posters. The students could also recall the names
of historical figures that we had discussed over the course of the month, and they

used this knowledge to guide themselves onward. The room became a little too
noisy at time, but I explained the rules well enough beforehand that the students
kept themselves under control for the most part. One thing I would do differently
next time, though, is that I would keep the members of Orange Group with me
and have them work directly with me to complete the activity because those
students spent most of the time wandering the room aimlessly.
