Unit Title: Steel Pipe
Lesson Title: How to cut and prep steel pipe for a weld joint.
Lesson Objectives: After a theory lesson and demonstration, the student will be able to
cut, bevel and prep two pieces of steel pipe with an 1/8 gap to within a 1/16 tolerance.
Time (length of lesson): 20 minutes
Equipment and Materials needed: steel pipe, wrap around, white paint marker, portable
bandsaw
Academic Standard(s) and Anchor(s) and/or Common Core Standard addressed by this
lesson: Standard CC.3.5.9-10 and Standard CC.3.5.11-12
Technical Standard(s) or Competencies taught in this lesson:
CIP 47.0201 500 Piping Practices
Introduction: Explain the different preferred methods of joining steel pipe: threading,
grooving, and welding. Describe the shortage of pipe welders in the U.S. and the
significant wage earning potential.
Body: Explain how to properly cut a pipe square using a wraparound. Show the students
a diagram of the anatomy of a weld joint including the bevel, land, and gap. Explain the
37 degree of the bevel, the approximately 1/16 land, and the 1/8 gap.
Summary: Describe the importance of these items and how critical this is to have a joint
that is easier to weld.
Proceed to shop for demonstration.
Evaluation/Student Assessment (attach student worksheets or assessments to this lesson
plan): Visual inspection of squareness of pieces and aesthetics/degree of bevel, as well
as the proper dimensions of the gap and land.
