Ohms Law Review

Why do I need Ohms law?

Ohms law is used in many different
applications to solve problems such as:
Troubleshooting circuits
Sizing wire and designing circuits
Sizing electrical heat packages
NOCTI testing!

Ohms law states that the

current passing through a
device is directly
proportional to the potential
difference applied. In other
words it uses mathematical
formulas and explains the
relationships between
voltage (E), current (I), watt
(P), and resistance (R)

Who Uses Ohms Law?

Ohms Law is used
by electricians,
engineers, HVAC
technicians,
automotive
technicians, auto
body technicians,
stereo installers to
name a few

It is the push or pressure

behind current flow
through a circuit, and is
measured in (E) volts

Current refers to the

quantity/volume of electrical
flow and is Measured in Amps
(A)

Power (P)
Power refers to the Output Work
and is Measured in Watts (P)

Resistance to the flow of

the current and is
Measured in Ohms

Voltage Problems:

Ohms Law

What is the voltage in a circuit that draws 16 amps and has a

resistance of 12 ohms?
E= IX R
E= 16 X 12
E= 192 volts
What is the voltage of a circuit that has 40 ohms resistance
and draws 15 amps?
E= R X I
E= 15 X40
E= 600 volts

Current Problems:

Ohms Law

How much current is flowing through a circuit that has 120

volts and presents 5 ohms resistance?
I= E/R
I= 120/5
I= 24 amps
What is the current in a circuit that has 240 volts and 12 ohms
of resistance?
I= E/R
I= 240/12
I= 20 amps

Ohms Law

Power/Watt Problems:

How much power is being consumed in a circuit that has

13.8
volts and draws 10 amps of current?
P= E X I
P= 13.8 X 10
P= 138 watts
How much power is consumed in a circuit that draws 2.5
amps and uses 12 volts?
P=E X I
P= 12 X 2.5
P= 30 watts

Ohms Law

Resistance Problems:

What is the resistance of a circuit that has 15 amps of current

and 135 volts?
R= E/I
R= 135/15
R= 9 ohms
What resistance is present if the circuit has 3 amps of current
and 69 volts?
R= E/I
R= 69/3
R=23 ohms
