Outcomes
By the end of this lesson,
students should be able
to:
Identify the
importance of
reproduction in
the continuity of a
species.
Describe the
differences in
male and female
sex cells and
analyse the
adaptations that
allow them to
effectively
perform their
functions.
Identify the
various parts of
the male and
female
reproductive
system.
By the end of the lesson,
students should be able
to:
Understand the
role and function

Overview of Lesson

What is the meaning of life? How would a species survive?

(The continuity of a species relies on the individual
reproducing).
Combination of traits (mum and dad)
There are some species that reproduce asexually (offspring
is identical)
How is this different to what people do? (Activity)
Human Reproduction
o Male and females have reproductive systems and
organs that produce different sex cells (gametesexplain term).
o Male sex cell Sperm (they are produced in the
testes and contain a nucleus containing
chromosomes, a cell membrane, head, middle piece
and tail)
o Female sex cell Eggs (they are produced in the
ovaries and contain a nucleus containing
chromosomes, a cytoplasm, a membrane)
o The male reproductive system
o The female reproductive system

Human Reproduction
o What do the different parts of the human
reproductive system do? (In relation to previous
lesson). How do all the parts of this system relate
back to the purpose?

of each part of the

male and female
reproduction
system.

Outcomes
By the end of the lesson,
students should be able
to:
Discuss the
changes that take
place in males and
females during
puberty.

Overview of Lesson

Puberty
o Human children are born with a complete set of sex
organs. However, they do not become active until
between the ages of 10 and 18.
o In males, the testes start to make sperm in boys and
in females, the ovaries start to release eggs this
stage is called puberty.
o During this period, many changes take place in
young men and women.
The changes that take place in young males and females.
Why is puberty important, when do you think is the right
age to have children and why?
Puberty (continued)
o Menstrual Cycle
Important part of puberty for girls is the
beginning of their monthly cycle the
menstrual cycle.
Involves the preparation of the uterus lining so
that it is able to receive a fertilized egg.
If the egg is fertilized, it can implant itself in
the prepared uterus lining.
If it is not fertilized, the lining of the uterus
breaks down and is lost from the body. This is
called menstruation or a period.
Bleeding starts as the lining of the uterus
breaks down and passes out of the vagina.
Ovulation and Fertilisation
o Ovulation In the female, one of the ovaries
produces an egg every 28 days.
o During sexual intercourse, millions of sperm are

students will be able to:

describe the
process of

ejaculated and released into the vagina and start to

swim towards the oviduct.
o The fusion of a sperm and an egg is called
fertilisation which results in the development of a
new individual organism.
Development of the baby (foetal development, what
happens, when does it happen), when does it become a
baby? When does it get a heart beat/moving etc.? (graphic
organiser etc. building their own idea about it).
