Introduction: I will introduce the book to the students. Tell the class we will be
working with numbers.
o T: Hello boys and girls today we will be reading Ten Apples Up On Top By
Dr. Seuss. We will also be working on the numbers 1,2,3,4 and 5 today.
T: Read Ten Apples Up On Top
o T: Count apples on some of the pages. Use terms more than, fewer than,
large, larger, largest.
Review the numbers one through five with students on whiteboard.
o T: Have the students practice writing and identifying the numbers one
through five on the white board.
o T: Boys and girls we will practice writing some of the numbers. I will call
only my friends who are sitting the quietest.
I will introduce the activity to the students.
o T: Today we have apples up on top! Well be counting apples on top of our
heads.
Students will head to the long table. I will place their crayons in the spot I would
have them sit.
Model the entire activity to the students. (Show them what to do on every page.)
I will distribute the stickers and have every individual student count their stickers.
o T: Boys and girls I have stickers we will use for our apples. Before we can
begin we will need to count how many stickers we have in all. Students
will count out 15 red stickers.
Each child will be handed a workbook.

Demonstrate first.

o T: Print name on the first line with pencil.

o T: I will first read the book and then have the students read the book with
me.
o T: Then I will draw a small picture of yourself or just your head
right above the sentence.
o T: Place some apples on top of your head.
o T: Count apples and print (write) the number.
o T: Read the sentence to the class. Count the apples.
o I have one apple up on top, etc.

Students will then begin the activity individually. I will be close by if students
need help but I will encourage them to ask a peer first.
To indicate a student is finish I will have them clean up their area.
o Put away crayons and pencil, etc.
Students who are finished will be paired up with another student who is also
finished and I will have them pair share their apple books.

Differentiated Teaching Strategies:

I will have the students represent numbers two different ways using both numbers and
pictures. For example students will be able to write the numbers one through five.
Students will also be able to use stickers to express hands on the quantity of each given
number.
Assessment:
At the end of the lesson each student will have completed a workbook demonstrating
their knowledge of numbers and number relationship to represent information. Each child
will have individually written the numbers one through five. Also children will have
individually demonstrated numbers and quantity to tell exactly how many objects are in
each group.
