AllStateisonlygiventothetoptwentyfiveplayersinArkansas.Thisisabigdealasanathlete,and,as
youcanguess,thisisamuchbiggerdealifyouareafreshman.Receivingthisawardtookoverten
yearsoftrainingtobecomethesoftballplayerIwasthen(thatsright,IstartedplayingsoftballwhenI
wasfour).Alotofhardwork,alotofsacrificesmade,andalotoftimespentbecomingthebestIcould
be.Itwasnoteasyatall.AtthetimeIalsoplayedcompetitivevolleyballandalsomanagedtomaintain
oneofthebestGPAsinmyclassmyfreshmanyearataperfect4.0.Itoldmyselfthatinordertobecome
thebestathlete,Ialsoneededtobecomethebeststudent.So,Iworkedhardintheclassroomandon
thesoftballfield.Myparents,teachers,andcoachalsoexpectednothinglessthanthebestinboth
environments.

Oncehighschoolsoftballstartedupmyfreshmanyear,noonesawmeasanythingspecial,evenmy
coachsaidshedidnotexpectanythingspectacularoutofme.EverydayIwenttopracticeafterschool
andmygoalwastooutworkeveryothergirlthatalsowantedthepitchingpositionthatIwanted.Ieven
plannedwithmymomthateveryWednesdayafterpracticewewouldgotoanindoorfacilityanddoextra
workbeforevolleyballpractices.

Onceopeningdaycamearound,Ididnotstart.Oncethesecondgamecamearound,Ididnotstart.But
oncethethirdgameoftheseasoncamearoundIwasthestartingvarsitypitcher.Otherteamsknewme
asthefreshmanpitcherwiththenastychangeup.Istartedtonotonlyshockopposingteams,butmy
ownteam.Theystartedtoseemeasaleader.Canyouimaginethat?Afreshmanasateamleader.The
restofmyteamstartedtoworkhardwhentheystartedrealizingthatanyonecandowhatIhadjust
done.

Sadly,halfwaythroughtheseasonIbrokemykneeslidingintohomeplateandwasouttherestofthe
season.Myhardwork,however,madeanimpressioninothersmindsandIwasstillgiventhehonorof
beingAllStatemyfreshmanyear.Idsayallthehardworkpaidoff,andIgottobealeaderforothers
alongtheway.
Challengescameatmeleftandrightinthisprocess.StartingfromwhenIwasabouttwelveandhad
beenpitchingforabouttwoyears.MytravelballcoachtoldmethatIwastosmalltobeanywhereneara
decentpitcherandthatIshouldconsiderchoosingadifferentposition.So,inordertostillgetsome
playingtimeIdecidedtobecomeanoutfielder,butduetomystubbornnessIwouldalsostayafter
