Populations Lesson Plan (Direct Instruction)

Teacher:Julie Koshy

Subject/Grade: Biology

Date: Mar. 17, 2016

Standard:
S4.C4.
PO1. Identify the relationships among organisms within populations, communities, ecosystems,
and biomes.
PO2. Describe how organisms are influenced by a particular combination of biotic (living) and
abiotic (nonliving) factors in an environment.
PO3. Assess how the size and the rate of growth of a population are determined by birth rate,
death rate, immigration, emigration, and carrying capacity of the environment.
Objective (SWBAT):
Describe the characteristics of a population and the factors that impact them.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):
Identify what a population is within an ecosystem.
Explain the difference between biotic and abiotic factors.
Explain how the environment impacts populations.
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable, include variety of methods of checking for understanding):
Students will write a paragraph describing how a population is impacted by biotic and abiotic
factors; a score of 8/10 will show mastery.
Key vocabulary: population, ecosystem, biotic, abiotic,
immigration, & emigration

Materials: 15.1 PowerPoint, 15.1 PowerNotes,

projector, lab notebooks, writing utensil, piece
of paper, and notecards

Guided

Instructional Input

Opening/Anticipatory Set: (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life)
Weve talked about overall evolution and how it works throughout the entire planet. Today we will be
starting with what makes up and impacts a population.
Teacher Will:
Use a PowerPoint presentation to
describe the populations and the factors that
impact them.

Student Will:
Listen to the explanations and take notes
of the most important facts, using the
PowerNotes if they choose.

Differentiation
Students who have difficulty writing can be given the PowerNotes (guided notes) for the
students to fill in. Also students who are unable to write may use a computer to type their notes.
Teacher Will:
Student Will:
Shows video clips that show differences in Write two important facts from the video.
populations and how the environment impacts
them.

Independent Practice Practice

Differentiation
Students who have difficulty writing notes can be given a fill in the blank worksheet to go
along with the animation.
Teacher Will:
Describe the requirements of the
paragraph: explanation of what a population is
and how the environment can impact the
population with one specific example.

Student Will:
Write a short paragraph that describes
what a population is and how the environment
can impact it.

Differentiation
Students who have memory challenges can use their notes.

Closure/Lesson Summary:
Summarize the most important thing to remember about populations and ask what else they would like
to learn about the populations.
